Mammoth ( English for ' Mammut ') is a song by the Greek-Belgian DJ duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike in collaboration with the German DJ and producer Moguai . The instrumental first appeared on March 4, 2013 as a single on the music portal Beatport . It belongs to the field of progressive house as well as the electro house subgenre big room . A re-release appeared in the summer of 2014 as a vocal version in collaboration with the British singer-songwriter Julian Perretta .

background

Creation & release

Mammoth was written by the brothers Dimitri and Michael Thivaios (Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike) together with André Tegeler (Moguai). Support was provided by the German producer trio Junkx (consisting of: Dennis Bierbrodt, Jürgen Dohr and Guido Kramer), who previously worked as authors for artists such as the Warp Brothers and The Disco Boys . As with previous releases, the Dutch record label Spinnin 'Records was also involved, through which the single was ultimately released.

Like Mike said in an interview with RTL II that the intro had already been produced and, unlike other recordings, it shouldn't be followed by a break , but by a drop . However, there was no melody for this yet. He also said that, as he often does, the idea for the drop came in the shower. When the melody started playing in his head, he stopped the water and went straight to the studio and wrote it down. The song was first played at the Belgian music festival Tomorrowland 2012 . The end result was finally announced in the Tomorrowland 2012 aftermovie, the soundtrack of which was produced by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike themselves.

Initially, no fixed date for the release of the single was announced, the title was only provided with the announcement “Coming Soon” ( English for “Coming Soon” ). In January 2013, the duo finally announced that the release was scheduled for March 4, 2013. The appointment was kept and the song could be found on Beatport from that day. The publication in music portals such as iTunes was dependent on the countries and supporting record labels. The song was released in Germany and Mexico in June 2013. In her home country Belgium, the release only took place in August 2014, in parallel with the “vocal version” Body Talk (Mammoth) and in the United States February 10, 2015 was selected as the release date. The single covers also differ from country to country and from record label to record label.

Mammoth begins with an intro that consists of a simple kick. After 1:15 minutes, the drop starts after some elements of a bridge . The drop ends at minute two and there is a bridge to the first break of the song. At 2:22, in addition to the melody, a kind of noise can be heard in combination with different sound elements. Meanwhile, the lead sound pushes itself slowly and distorted with a kick into the foreground. Now another bridge sounds, which consists of a repetitive part of the melody. The second drop starts at 3:15. This is repeated four times, only changing in the kick, until an outro starts that contains the length of the intro.

promotion

The piece made its debut at Tomorrowland 2012, where it was played by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike on July 28, 2012. Two months later it was used in the Tomorrowland 2012 aftermovie , where it received a lot of attention as a mash-up with the song Midnight City by the French EDM band M83 . Since these songs are very similar and work well together, selected sources incorrectly assume that Mammoth is an official cover version of Midnight City . On October 7, 2012, Moguai first played the song at the Sunburn Festival in India. Between late 2012 and early 2013, other DJs became aware of the song and used it in their sets and podcast episodes. They received support from Avicii , David Guetta and Martin Garrix, among others . The official full version was found on January 11, 2013 in Hardwell's " Hardwell-On-Air " podcast episode # 98. The studio version received a positive response and there were numerous rumors that it would be released soon. In addition to the announcement, unlike her other singles, no other PR campaigns appeared . An official music video did not appear despite long expectations from fans. The reason for this is the later publication of the body talk vocal version .

reception

criticism

Mammoth received almost exclusively positive feedback at Tomorrowland 2012 . The critic Matthew Grimalda of the music site "Mixjunkies" also praised the song and wrote:

“You want to see what happens when 2 crazy Belgians form a team with an equally crazy German? You get something huge, like a "mammoth"! With this amazing combination of powerful bass, distorted synths, and massive breakdowns, it would be inconceivable that this shouldn't be a guaranteed number one hit. You will see everyone raise their hands in the air and celebrate to this song at every major festival this year, so get your copy of "Mammoth" which was released on Spinnin Records. "

Commercial win

In the Beatport Top 100, Mammoth reached the top 10 after just one day and rose to number one after a few more days, where the track stayed for over a month. Mammoth was also able to achieve a chart placement in Germany . Help was provided by the German record label " Kontor Records ", which included the song on their compilation Kontor Top of the Clubs Vol. 59 . In the German iTunes charts, Mammoth moved up to 62nd place shortly after its release and, as in the singles charts, was able to stay in the top 100 for three weeks. The duo also reached the official single charts in France. In the Netherlands they also moved up to 89th place, which is the unofficial top 100. However, no placement was achieved in any other country. The reason for this is, among other things, the sometimes heavily delayed release of the song.

Body Talk (Mammoth)

Single cover of the Body Talk vocal version

Body Talk (Mammoth) ( English for 'body language (Mammut)') is the title of the “vocal version” of the song. A vocal track was placed over the instrumental version, with the sequence of the instrumental being adapted to the singing. This version was sung by the British singer-songwriter Julian Perretta . It was first published on August 4, 2014.

In addition to the new recording with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Perretta also produced a "solo version". He uploaded it to his official YouTube channel on November 4, 2016. It was originally due to be released on November 17, 2014 via Universal Music , but the release has been canceled for unknown reasons.

Background & structure

On July 18, 2014, the vocal version was first played by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. This was like Mammoth at Tomorrowland 2014. Although the music platform Beatport usually offers the songs first, this track was released for the first time on August 4, 2014 in the Belgian iTunes store, in parallel with the heavily delayed “instrumental version”. Beatport officially started offering Body Talk (Mammoth) on September 1, 2014. Until January 2015, the single was gradually released in the other countries.

The text consists of a series of requests and crushes that Perretta directs to an undisclosed person. Furthermore, he is filled with wishful thinking, but it is not clear whether he will achieve his goals. He sings the text in a mostly normal, slightly mysterious mood. Because the instrumental itself has its own atmosphere and does not correspond to that of a ballad, “good mood song” or something similar, exaggerated, profound feelings and moods can be excluded. Nevertheless, the chants are haunting and describe clear conviction of the person to whom the song is addressed.

Body Talk (Mammoth) is divided into two parts. These depend on the instrumental, which consists of a break, a bridge and a drop. The ten stanzas are divided into these two parts. You can divide almost all stanzas into four verses, the only two exceptions being the first refrain, as this is repeated once and three lines of text repeated during the drop. The entire song has an iambus and corresponds to four-four time . The track starts with the first verse, followed by the second. The first chorus can be found parallel to a short piece between the main melody and the bridge. The second chorus follows during the bridge. The drop begins on the last verse of the chorus “Let me make your body talk”. The whole scheme repeats itself during the second half of the song.

Music video

The official music video was uploaded on August 4, 2014 in parallel with the release of the single by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. It's 3:54 minutes and a one shot . It was viewed over ten million times in a year.

reception

criticism

Body Talk (Mammoth) received positive feedback. Perretta in particular was praised for his voice. The same thing happened with the text, which received a lot of attention for its background and strong imagery. Critic Patrick Butz of the music website Dance-Charts was also able to make friends with the vocal edit and wrote:

“They didn't bother to redesign the entire track here, but the vocals are actually pretty good. Julian Perretta has a great voice that comes into its own here. Plus, the lyrics are pretty well written and fun to hear. Of course, the number is not necessarily intended for DJs. They will probably play the original edit of "Mammoth" anyway. This track is clearly intended for normal listeners who can do something with good vocals. Whether you like them or not depends a lot on your individual taste [...] There are definitely worse vocal edits. Anyone who knows the original and liked it back then will certainly appreciate this new vocal edit. "

Commercial win

The "Vocal-Edit" was able to follow up on the success of the original and also reached the single charts in several countries. Although they couldn't top their success in Germany, the single in France got a lot higher than the instrumental. There it reached its highest listing at position 106. Body Talk (Mammoth) also reached the official single charts in Bulgaria and stayed there for three weeks in the top 40 with a top position of 33rd. Due to the parallel release to the instrumental, the "Vocal-Edit" did not act as a new edition and reached directly an entry at number two in Flanders, where the single was in the charts for 13 weeks. In Wallonia it rose to number 25 and was on the charts for nine weeks.

Versions and remixes

A number of remixes and bootlegs were released for both titles . On the one hand official, on the other hand also unofficial. Often times the piece has been completely transformed and based on new genres. The hardstyle remix by Coone and that of Carnage, which can be classified as traps , stands out in particular . A large number of remixes, including by Blasterjaxx and Mercer, have not yet been released, but are still played at many festivals and in numerous podcast episodes . The British DJ duo Macrosound revised the song in January 2013 and gave it songs for the first time. For the official “vocal edit” only a drum & bass remix from SPY was released

In addition, Arcade Mammoth was released in 2018, a new version in which, in addition to Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike and Moguai, W&W also contributed. The accompanying music video is largely characterized by recordings from several EDM festivals, which alternate approximately every 10 to 15 seconds.
