Walk off the Earth is a Canadian indie rock - band from Burlington , Ontario , founded of 2006. In the course of their work, the group has attracted an audience of millions, particularly on YouTube, with unusual arrangements (including ukulele and theremin ) and amazing performances, both with their own songs and with cover versions of world-famous pop songs. With the song Somebody That I Used to Know , a cover version of the Belgian-Australian musician Gotye , the group released a music video on YouTube in January 2012 that generated hits of 17 million within a week ( Internet phenomenon ) and over 74 million within three months reached over 188 million by mid-July 2020. Band member Gianni "Luminati" Nicassio is also the producer of the band's audio and video recordings.

Band history

The first album of the group was published in 2008 under the title Smooth Like Stone on a Beach at CDBY, a second album was released as a MP3 - Download 2010. Slapdash Records. The band has so far covered songs by Adele and LMFAO, among others . When Gianni "Luminati" Nicassio heard Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye on the radio, the idea was born to cover this song along the lines of Radioheads Karma Police . With the participation of singer Sarah Blackwood ( The Creepshow ), a music video was shot within 14 hours and posted online on YouTube on January 6, 2012. Within a week, the video reached 17 million hits. In mid-March 2012, the video had over 74 million hits on YouTube (as of July 12, 2020: 188,603,892). The spread of the video on the Internet was accelerated by, among other things, a recommendation from Russell Crowe on Twitter . In the video, the band members play a guitar together, one of them hits the rhythm on its body and everyone sings the song. The song was played on the radio a little later and the band was a guest on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show . The song hit the charts in various countries . The song reached number 3 in the Canadian Top Digital Downloads and number 9 in the Netherlands . On March 17, 2012 the band played their first concert in Germany in Berlin. The band was also involved in the 2012 video Rewind YouTube Style .

In 2018, Mike Taylor died unexpectedly from natural causes. In 2019 Ryan Marshall left the band after 13 years.
