The city of Burlington [ ˈbəɹlɪŋtən ] (officially City of Burlington ) is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario , about 50 km southwest of Toronto and 10 km northeast of Hamilton .

Burlington emerged in 1873 from Wellington Square and Port Nelson. Burlington has been a city since 1914. Today the port is only used for recreational shipping . The city is located in Canada's most important economic area, the Golden Horseshoe , and is a commercial and industrial center.

Burlington's tourist attractions include the Royal Botanical Gardens , Canada's largest botanical garden with a collection of lilac bushes ( Syringa spp.) That is unique in the world , and the Burlington Art Center , which is home to art exhibitions and Canada's premier collection of contemporary ceramics.

Burlington is located about 50 km south of Toronto and lies directly on Lake Ontario . The city borders the suburbs of Toronto, Oakville and Mississauga to the north , and Hamilton to the south .

economy

Burlington's economy is characterized by its proximity to larger companies in the southern part of the province. Burlington is also close to the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), including the city of Hamilton with its transport infrastructure. Burlington Mall and the Maple Center are very popular shopping centers in the city. The megacity of Toronto is located approx. 50 km north of Burlington. The city has experienced an economic boom in recent years, which will continue in the future. The city is centrally located in the Golden Horseshoe , which is specially populated by automobile production and other areas of the manufacturing industry. The largest industries in Burlington include food, packaging, electronics, automotive and transportation, services, and chemical and pharmaceuticals. The five largest privately held companies in the city include: Fearmans Prok Inc., Cogeco Cable, Evertz Microsystems , Boehringer Ingelheim, and EMC2. The largest public economic sectors are the City of Burlington, the Halton District Board of Education, the Halton Catholic District School Board, and the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital.

Burlington's public (elementary) elementary and high schools are subordinate to the Halton District School Board. Burlington Catholic elementary and secondary schools are supervised by the Halton Catholic District School Board. In public and private schools, English is taught as the first language and French as the second language. Burlington has a total of 28 elementary schools, seven high schools (up to grade 12) and eleven private schools.

Universities

The McMaster University has a campus of the DeGroote School of Business in Burlington and offers MBA and executive management programs at. The Australian Charles Sturt University has operated a Study Center in Burlington since 2005. The university offers Masters courses in Master of International Education, Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies and the Master of Business Administration. The Canadian Therapeutic College also has an office on campus.

Public transportation is operated by Burlington Transit , a municipal company. Major motorway connections to which Burlington is connected are the Queen Elizabeth Way , Highway 403, Highway 407ETR , and Highway 5. Passenger train connections are provided by GO Transit and VIA Rail Canada at Aldershot Station . Rail freight is operated by the Canadian National Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway .
