Itabashi ( Japanese 板橋 区 , - ku ) is one of the 23 districts of Tokyo , the capital of Japan .

geography

Itabashi is on the Kantō level . It is located in the north of the city between Nerima in the west and Kita in the east. South of Itabashi is the Toshima District . The Arakawa borders the district in the north, on the other side are the cities of Wakō and Toda in Saitama Prefecture . To the south, the Shakujii River crosses the district.

The center of the district is a business district, while there are industrial settlements in the north.

history

The name Itabashi, in English “plank bridge” refers to a wooden suspension bridge over the Shakujii, which already existed here during the Heian period . In the Edo period , the Nakasendō ran over the nearby Shimo-Itabashi (lower plank bridge), so that the name expanded to the surrounding area. Itabashi was one of the four post stations in Edo , where travelers to and from the capital stopped. The fiefdom ( Han ) Kaga had a country estate here.

On October 1, 1932, nine small towns ( Machi ) and villages ( Mura ) of the then Kitatoshima-gun of the city of Tokyo were annexed and combined to form the Itabashi district. On May 3, 1947, it became one of the then 22 boroughs ( tokubetsu-ku ). On August 1 of the same year, Nerima District was split off from Itabashi.
