Fumio Itabashi

Fumio Itabashi ( Japanese 板橋 文 夫 , Itabashi Fumio ; born March 8, 1949 in Ashikaga , Tochigi Prefecture ) is a Japanese jazz pianist .

Live and act

Itabashi received piano lessons from the age of eight. He started playing jazz while studying at the Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo. He initially belonged to the band Sadao Watanabe , with whom the first recordings were made in 1971. Then he belonged to the quintet of Terumasa Hino (1974-1975). From 1975 onwards he led his own groups, initially a trio with which the live recording Tou (Frasco, with Tsutomu Okada and Takuji Kusumoto ) made the same year ; In 1979 he presented the album Nature , which he had recorded with Hideaki Mochizuki , Koichi Yamazaki , Kenichi Kameyama , Ryōjirō Furusawa , Yoshio Ohtomo and Hiroshi Hatsuyama .

On the solo album Watarase he interpreted jazz standards such as “ I Can't Get Started ” and his own compositions influenced by Japanese music. Between 1978 and 1982 he was a member of the Takeo Moriyama quintet . He has also recorded with Kohsuke Mine , Kazumi Watanabe , Hiroaki Katayama , Shigeharu Mukai , Takeo Moriyama, Tamami Koyakee , Seiichi Nakamura and Akira Ohmori . From the 1990s he played in New York City with Ray Anderson , in Japan with Hiroaki Katayama and Hideki Tachibana . In the field of jazz he was involved in 39 recording sessions between 1972 and 2011.
