Suginami ( Japanese 杉 並 区 , - ku ) is one of the 23 districts of Tokyo , the capital of Japan .
geography
With an area of 34.02 km² Suginami is eighth of the 23 districts of Tokyo.
The rivers Kanda, Zenpukuji and Myōseiji flow through Suginami.
Suginami is bordered by the Shibuya and Nakano districts to the east, the Nerima district to the north, the cities of Mitaka and Musashino to the west , and the Setagaya district to the south .
Suginami is made up of the following 24 districts: Amanuma, Asagaya , Eifuku, Hamadayama, Hōnan, Horinouchi, Igusa, Imagawa, Izumi, Kamiigusa, Kōenji, Ogikubo, Kugayama, Matsui, Matsunoki, Miyamae, Momoi, Shubo, Shimoguizuikusa, Kamiigusa, Nigishiizusa , Takaido, Wada and Zenpukuji.
history
It is said that in the Edo period the feudal lord Okabe planted Japanese sickle firs ( sugi ) along the Ōme Kaidō highway . The trees were the boundary of the dominion. The sickle fir avenue ( suginami ) no longer existed in the Meiji period , but the name of the village Suginami has been retained. Suginami has developed into a city and was incorporated into Tokyo as a borough in 1932 .
politics
Mayor of Suginami is Ryō Tanaka , who was re-elected for a third term of office in June 2018 against three candidates with 50.3% of the votes.From 1994 to 2010 he was a member of the Prefectural Parliament for Suginami as a member of the New Japan Party , later the Democratic Party and from 2009 President of Parliament. In 2010, he replaced Mayor Hiroshi Yamada , who had resigned for his candidacy for the national upper house. The local parliament is elected in uniform regional elections (most recently in 2019 ) and has 48 regular members.
The district elects six members to the Tokyo Prefecture Parliament, two each from the LDP and Tomin First no Kai and one member each from Kōmeitō and KPJ in the last regular election in 2017 . Two candidates from the Democratic Progressive Party and one from the Seikatsusha Network missed one of the best six votes.
For the lower house of the national parliament, the majority of Suginami forms the constituency of Tokyo 8 , which has been represented by the Liberal Democrat Nobuteru Ishihara since its establishment in the electoral reform of the 1990s . Most recently, he defended his seat in the 2017 election with 39.2% of the vote. The Hōnan district in the very southeast of the district has been part of constituency 7 with the Shibuya district since 2017 .

Worth seeing are u. a. the Ōmiya Hachiman Shrine, the Suginami Animation Museum and Wadabori Park, the Zenpukuji Park and the green area on the Zenpukuji River.

There are 13 major streets in Suginami: the Kōshū Kaidō ( National Road 20 ), the Ōme-Kaidō, the Itsukaichi-Kaidō, the Shinōme-Kaidō, the Hitomi-Kaidō as well as the Kannana-, Hōnan-, Inokashira-, Chūsugi-, Kyūwaseda - and Sengawa Street.

Educational institutions
Suginami consists mainly of residential areas, there is little industry. That is why there are 44 public and three private primary schools, 23 public and nine private middle schools, nine public and twelve private high schools and six private universities. In addition to a central one, there are 10 local libraries.
