The Marunouchi Line ( Japanese 丸 ノ 内線 , Marunouchi-sen ) is a subway line and part of the network of the Tōkyō Metro , one of Tokyo's two subway companies . It is the second line built in Tokyo . The route runs in a U-shape from Ogikubo Station in the west of the city via the Shinjuku Economic and Administrative District through the Marunouchi Economic Center near Tokyo Station , before reversing its direction and heading to Ikebukuro .

Trivia

The color of the Marunouchi line on the route maps is red BSicon lDST red.svg, the line has the number 4. Its stations are marked with the letter M followed by a number. A branch line leads to Hōnanchō , these three stations are marked with a small m .

the Kanda River at Ochanomizu Station

Like the first Tokyo line, the Ginza Line , the Marunouchi runs on standard gauge (all others are narrow-gauge railways) and uses the shortest trains in the metro network with only six cars.

The age of the line, the relatively short trains, and the few alternative connections to the important Shinjuku interchange station long made it one of the most congested lines in Tokyo, with the opening of the Toei Ōedo line alleviating the problem somewhat.

In order to cope with the high volume of traffic, the trains run every minute and fifty seconds during the morning rush hour.
