With Ikebukuro ( Jap. 池袋 ) to the designated district around the Ikebukuro station in the district of Toshima the Japanese capital Tokyo (officially only the name of some streets in the district). The dominant building of the Ikebukuro skyline is Sunshine 60 , a 60-story skyscraper that was the tallest in Japan when it was built and stands on the site of the former Sugamo prison .

history

On May 1, 1889, the Mura Ikebukuro ( 池袋 村 , -mura ) was incorporated into the Mura Sugamo ( 巣 鴨 村 ), which has split off from the Machi Sugamo ( 巣 鴨 町 , -machi ). On July 20, 1918, the Mura Sugamo became Machi Nishisugamo ( 西 巣 鴨 町 , -machi ).

On October 1, 1932, Nishisugamo, Nagasaki ( 長崎 町 , -machi ), Sugamo and Takada ( 高田 町 , -machi ) formed the new Toshima district of the then city ​​of Tokyo .

On the east side of the train station is the Sunshine City , which, in addition to the Sunshine 60, consists of shopping malls, offices and a hotel. To the west of Sunshine City there are numerous shops related to Japanese pop culture, but they are primarily aimed at a female audience. For this reason, this part of Ikebukuro has also been nicknamed Otome Road (乙 女 ロ ー ドOtome Rōdo , literally: girl street).

There are also a number of large department stores, including Seibu and Mitsukoshi . The area behind the Bungeiza theater is dominated by love hotels , massage parlors and other sex-oriented establishments. There are also many normal restaurants, bars and cinemas.

On the west side is the Tōbu department store, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space .

In Ikebukuro are the Rikkyō University , the Tokyo School of Music and the Teikyō Heisei University .

In the third episode of the first season of the TV series Kodoku no Gurume (孤独 の グ ル メ) , the protagonist ( Yutaka Matsushige ) is in Ikebukuro.

The light novel series Durarara !! (jap. デ ュ ラ ラ ラ !!, Dyurarara !!) , which was adapted as both a manga and an anime television series, is set in Ikebukuro.
