action

Cosplayer as Celty Sturluson

The young Mikado Ryūgamine ( 竜 ヶ 峰 帝 人 ) lived for a long time only in the small town in which he was born and could not even come to class trips. With his start in high school he would like to participate in the exciting life of a big city and accepts the invitation of his childhood friend Masaomi Kida ( 紀 田 正 臣 ) to a school in Ikebukuro . Masaomi shows his friend the city and introduces him to some of his friends; and finally he warns of people and gangs that Mikado should better avoid. These include the violent Shizuo Heiwajima ( 平和 島 静 雄 ), the information seller Izaya Orihara ( 折 原 臨 也 ), and a mysterious gang called Dollars . On his first day, he also manages to glimpse an urban legend: a headless motorcyclist who works as a courier for the underground of Ikebukuro.

The motorcyclist lives with Shinra Kishitani ( 岸 谷 新 羅 ), a doctor who works for the criminal in Ikebukuro. Twenty years ago the Dullahan named Celty Sturluson came to Japan from Ireland in search of her lost head. She hopes to get more information about her head, which she can feel in her vicinity while carrying out the tasks for the Tokyo underworld. She met her roommate, who is interested in her being but also in her as a woman, on her trip when he was still a child.

In his class, Mikado is elected speaker, along with the reserved girl Anri Sonohara ( 園 原 杏 里 ). Soon Masaomi and Mikado see their classmate being threatened by some girls and a supposed member of the dollars. When they want to intervene, Izaya is added, then more dollars and finally Shizuo, so that it degenerates into a fight - also because Shizuo hates Izaya and doesn't want to see him in Ikebukuro. His hatred is based not only on his general dislike, but on the fact that Izaya once accused him of a crime and Shizuo lost his job as a barman. Nevertheless, he still wears his bar outfit every day, even if he now works as a bodyguard for the debt collector Tom. Shizuo is extremely strong because his body cannot control his strength. Although he often injured himself as a child, he became more and more resilient.

Masaomi is curious about what is behind the dollars, but finds out little about them. The group has no hierarchy and apparently all members do what they feel like doing. Masaomi's friends also receive an invitation while they are rescuing an illegal immigrant they know from human traffickers. Not long afterwards the rumor got around that the dollars save people from kidnapping. Namie Yagiri works in the company that commissions these kidnappings and carries out experiments and operations on them. Her brother Seiji Yagiri has been obsessed with the family-owned head of a dullahan since childhood. One day when he disappears with his head, Namie Yagiri finds her brother with the head and the slain student Mika Harima, who has been chasing Seiji. With the Dullahan's head on his body, Seiji finally wants to live out his love. But he is still unreliable with his obsession and puts the company's machinations at risk. In addition, Namie is no less obsessed with her brother and jealous of his love.

When Mika Harima and Seiji meet Celty, who recognizes her head on her, Mika panics and flees. By chance she meets Mikado and takes refuge with him. When he comes home the next day, Mika has disappeared and he is attacked by Yagiri's henchmen who are looking for Mika. But Izaya and Celty, also looking for Mika, help him. To outsmart Yagiri, Mikado reveals that he is the founder of the dollars. Initially created out of boredom in his small town over the Internet, they would have become independent. Now he is calling everyone together for the first time - where he also orders Yagiri. Without an attack, the overwhelming power of hundreds of people will panic. Seiji also appears and demands his sweetheart back. He learns that Mika is not actually wearing Celty's head, but has only been operated on to look like that. Seiji should finally break away from the Dullahan head. Now he agrees to a relationship with Mika, who loves him even though he wanted to kill her because she at least reminds him of his great love. Since Celty noticed all this, she now knows that Shinra, who performed the operation on Mika, has known where her head is for a long time. She confronts him and he defends himself by saying that he is afraid of losing her if she achieves her goal. She has led a full life for the past few years, even without her head. Celty forgives Shinra, even if she doesn't completely leave her uncertainty of not having her head back.

Meanwhile, Mikado, who doesn't tell his classmates about his role in the dollars and the events around him, confesses his love to Sonohara.

reception

The story of the "sporadic melange of mystery and city thriller loosened up by humorous passages" initially seemed confused, according to the German magazine Animania on the anime. The story in changing perspectives and the many characters contribute to this. Ultimately, however, the series manages to interest the viewer anyway and to reveal the plot piece by piece. It is "staged in an exciting and stylish manner", with "well staged action scenes", "sometimes wacky" musical accompaniment and an experimental but not strenuous visual implementation. The animations are fluid and the backgrounds are of a high quality and lavishly designed.

The volumes of the first manga sold around 130,000 each in Japan, the volumes of the Seika series thereafter each sold over 24,000 times.
