In the late 1970s , publicist John Styll began publishing a magazine called Contemporary Christian Music Magazine , or CCM Magazine for short . To date, this magazine is the most important publication on contemporary Christian music in the USA .

Through the movement of the Jesus People , their music, the so-called "Jesus Music", had become very popular and gave birth to its own industry, which recorded continuous growth. Stylistically, the magazine covered a broad spectrum, starting with traditional gospel music , through the newly developed pious folk and pop music, right up to rock music and all other forms in later years. Christian artists who dominated reporting at the beginning were Larry Norman, Love Song and Randy Stonehill and also artists with partly Christian messages such as Bob Dylan , Al Green or T-Bone Burnett. Today the magazine reflects current developments in this CCM scene, reports on artists, new releases and theological debates in the area of conflict between church and music .

There is also a publication comparable to CCM Magazine in Great Britain , Cross Rhythms Magazine . In Germany in the 1970s and 1980s there were the magazines Cogo and IXX , which were dedicated to the Christian music scene. As its follow-up publication, eXact! .
