Arakawa ( Japanese 荒 川 区 , - ku ) is one of the 23 districts of Tokyo , the capital of Japan . The name of the district is derived from the river of the same name .
history
During the Edo period , the district was still rural. During the industrialization in the Meiji period , factories settled on the banks of the Arakawa. On October 1, 1932, the area was incorporated into the old Tōkyō and became one of the then 35 municipal districts.

Arakawa is home to the Tokyo Metropolitan University of Health Sciences ( 東京 都 立 保健 科学 大学 , Tōkyō-toritsu hoken kakgaku daigaku ), the Shuto Daigaku Tōkyō , the Tokyo Metropolitan College of Aeronautical Engineering ( 東京 都 立 航空 工業 高等 専 門 学校 , Tōkyō-toritsu kōkū kōgyō kōtō semmon gakkō ) and the Arakawa campus of the Tokyo Metropolitan College of Industrial Technology ( 東京 都 立 産業 技術 高等 専 門 学校 , Tōkyō-toritsu sangyō gijutsu kōtō semmon gakkō ).
politics
Mayor of Arakawa City has been the former reformist conservative (LDP / NFP / LP / CP ) MP Taiichirō Nishikawa since 2004 . In 2016 he was elected for the fourth time. The City Assembly has 32 regular members and will be elected in unified local elections (most recently in 2019 ).
Arakawa City is a two-mandate constituency for the Tokyo Metropolis Assembly ; in the 2017 election , the seats went to Shin'ichi Keino (Kōmeitō) and Gaku Takiguchi ( Tomin First -endorsed independent).
In the House of Representatives , the lower house of the National Day, Arakawa, which together with Sumida City forms the 14th constituency of Tokyo , is currently represented by the liberal democrat Midori Matsushima . It was confirmed in the 2017 general election with 46.9% of the vote.
