Nikko Kaido
The Nikkō Kaidō ( Japanese 日光 街道 ) is one of the five highways . It first uses the Ōshū Kaidō and branches off from this in Utsunomiya and then ended on a specially constructed road in Nikkō .
history
The road was completed around 1617 so that the magnificent Tokugawa Ieyasu tomb in Nikkō could be easily visited. The grave complex for Tokugawa Iemitsu was added later .
Prince Matsudaira Masatsuna ( 松 平 正 綱 ; 1576–1648), who was the first three Tokugawa shoguns a. a. as a commissioner ( 奉行 , Bugyō ) had served for the construction of the Tōshō-gū , had 50,000 Sugi planted to line the last kilometers of the road to Nikkō. Today there are still 13,600 trees with a diameter of at least 30 cm. The avenue is the longest avenue of its kind in the world and is the only object in Japan that has been awarded twice, namely as a special national history trail ( 国 の 特別 史跡 , Kuni no tokubetsu shiseki ) and as a special natural monument ( 特別 天然 記念 物 , Tokubetsu tennen kinenbutsu ) .
