Utsunomiya ( Japanese 宇 都 宮 市 , Utsunomiya- shi ) is a city and the administrative seat of the Japanese prefecture of Tochigi .
The origin of the name is not certain, but probably comes from ichi-no-miya , which designates the highest Shinto shrine in a province, here the forerunner province of Tochigi, Shimotsuke , and refers to the Futaarayama shrine in the city center.
