Hachinohe ( Japanese 八 戸 市 , - shi ) is a port city in Aomori Prefecture in the northeast of Honshū , the main island of Japan . The city has 223,666 inhabitants. In addition to fishing , the textile industry and wood processing play an economic role.

Hachinohe is located southeast of Aomori and north of Morioka on the Pacific Ocean .
history
The city has existed since May 1, 1929.
On March 11, 2011, Hachinohe was affected by the largest earthquake recorded in Japan so far, the Tōhoku earthquake and the subsequent tsunami . In Port Hachinohe considerable damage was done, large and small fishing boats were overturned and swept away, the streets in the harbor area were flooded. The port was colored black by the spilled oil, the cityscape changed. The evacuation lasted until the next day. 254 residential buildings were completely destroyed and 624 others were partially destroyed. 100 cars washed away. One fatality was reported and another person was missing.
