Misawa ( Japanese 三沢市 , - shi ) is a city in Aomori Prefecture in the region Tohoku in Japan . The American Air Force maintains the Misawa Air Base here .

Misawa is east of Aomori and north of Hachinohe on the Pacific Ocean .
history
In February 1948, the Mura Misawa ( 三 澤 村 , -mura ) and parts of the Mura Rokunohe ( 六 戸 村 , -mura ), Shimoda ( 下 田村 , -mura ) and Uranodate ( 浦 野 館 村 , -mura ) joined in the Kamikita-gun to Machi Ōmisawa ( 大三 澤 町 , -machi , literally: Grand Misawa ) together. On September 1, 1958 , the renaming in Misawa took place - but using the Shinjitai spelling - with the appointment to Shi .
When tsunami waves reached Misawa on March 11, 2011 after the Tōhoku earthquake , two fatalities, aged 78 and 60, were reported. 19 residential buildings were completely destroyed by the natural disaster of March 11, 2011 and 22 others were partially destroyed.
