Location of Hiranais in Aomori Prefecture | ||
Hiranai ( Japanese 平 内 町 Hiranai-machi ) is a city (- machi ) in Higashitsugaru-gun ("East Tsugaru County") in the Japanese prefecture of Aomori . Hiranai is located on Mutsu Bay (Mutsu-wan) on the northern tip of the main island of Honshu .
Timber industry and fishing are the determining factors of economic Hiranai.
The name comes from the Ainu words of pira 'cliff' and nay 'river' due to its location in a river valley on the Natsudomari peninsula . For the Japanese transcription, the characters for 平 hira , German 'flat' and 内 nai , German 'inside' were chosen.
history
When the Japanese community was reorganized on April 1, 1889, the village communities were Higashi-Hiranai ( 東 平 内 村 -mura , German 'East Hiranai' ), Naka-Hiranai ( 中平 内 村 -mura , German 'Middle Hiranai' ) and Nishi -Hiranai ( 西 平 内 村 -mura , German 'West Hiranai' ) established. On October 1, 1928 Naka-Hiranai was raised to the municipality ( Machi ) Kominato ( 小 湊 町 ).
During the Second World War , a ship was sunk on July 15, 1945 off the north coast of the village by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), killing 3 people and injuring 9 (see air raids on Japan ).
Hiranai was formed on March 31, 1955 from the amalgamation of all three communities.
