Mizuho ( Japanese 瑞 穂 町 , - machi ) is a city in Nishi-Tama district in the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo .
geography
With the establishment of independent cities in the second half of the 20th century, Mizuho is now cut off from the other remaining municipalities in the district.
Neighboring communities of Mizuho are the (independent) cities of Fussa , Hamura , Ōme , Iruma , Tokorozawa and Musashimurayama , starting in the south in a clockwise direction .
history
The community was created in 1940 through the union of the four village communities ( -mura ) Hakonegasaki , Ishihata , Tonogaya and Nagaoka . These had already formed a community association (chōson kumiai) since the introduction of modern local regulations in 1889 - until 1893, like the entire district as part of Kanagawa Prefecture . In 1940 the Imperial Army Air Force opened the Tama airfield (Tama hikōjō) on the southern municipal border , and since the end of the war the Air Force’s Yokota Air Base, which was significantly enlarged in the 1950s and also had a significant influence on the development of Mizuho. In 1958, a large part of the village of Moto-Sayama in Iruma County of Saitama Prefecture was incorporated into Mizuho in an inter-prefecture-level merger .
The population of Mizuho doubled between the 1960s and 1990s, largely stagnated in the 2000s and is now declining slightly.
Mizuho and Morgan Hill in the US state of California have been twinned since 2006 .
Attractions
On the eastern border of Mizuho is the Noyamakita Rokudōyama Park, a prefectural park (toritsu kōen) on the edge of the Sayama Prefectural Nature Park (Tōkyō toritsu Sayama shizen kōen) , which also extends into the urban area of Mizuho.
traffic
The Hachikō line of today's JR Higashi-Nihon connects the city with the Hakonegasaki station to the rail network since 1931. The most important road connection is national road 16 , which bypasses the center of Mizuho on the Mizuho bypass , which was completed in 1989 .
economy
Mizuho has a maintenance facility for IHI aircraft engines that employs around 1,200 people. A well-known agricultural product from Mizuho is the Sayama tea , in contrast to the tea grown in Saitama Prefecture also known as Tokyo Sayama tea (Tōkyō-Sayama-cha) .
education
The prefectural agricultural and horticultural high school Mizuho (Tōkyō toritsu Mizuho nōgei kōtō-gakkō) is the only high school in Mizuho. The city of Mizuho operates five elementary and two middle schools.
