history
The area of today's Higashikurume originally belonged to Musashi Province . In 1889, the village of Kurume was established in the Kitatama District of Kanagawa Prefecture as part of the land registry reform of the Meiji Restoration of April 1, 1889 . The entire district was placed under the control of Tokyo Prefecture in 1893 . Higashikurume's development began with the construction of the Musashino Line in 1915, as many commuters now settled along the railway line due to the easily accessible city center of Tokyo. Due to the strong population growth, Kurume was elevated to a city in 1956. The construction of community buildings in the 1960s and 1970s caused the population to continue to grow. The current city of Higashikurume was founded on October 1, 1970.
