Tachikawa ( Japanese 立 川 市 , - shi ) is a city in Tokyo Prefecture, west of Tokyo .
geography
Tachikawa is west of Tokyo and north of Hachioji . The Tama River flows through the city from southwest to southeast.
history
As Tachikawa- mura , as a village community in the district Kitatama (North Tama) of Kanagawa Prefecture , was Tachikawa in 1889 with the introduction of modern municipal orders. It became part of Tokyo Prefecture in 1893 when the three western parts of Tama County were transferred from Kanagawa to Tokyo. In 1923 Tachikawa became a Tachikawa- machi (district) city. Tachikawa-shi has existed since 1940 , it was the third independent city in Tokyo after Tokyo and Hachiōji and the 175th nationwide.
