The monorail Tama ( Japanese 多 摩 都市 モ ノ レ ー ル 線 , Tama toshi monorēru-sen , German city monorail line Tama ), usually called Tama Monorail ( 多 摩 モ ノ レ ー ル , Tama monorēru ), is an important part of the main public transport island of Tokyo in the west of the Japanese prefecture Honshu . The 16 km long monorail serves 19 stations in the cities of Tama , Hino , Tachikawa and Higashiyamato . It was opened in 1998 and expanded in 2000. It is operated by Tokyo Tama Intercity Monorail .
description
The 16.0 km long, double-track line leads in a north-south direction through the Tama area . It was built by Hitachi Transportation Systems on the all-way rail principle. Together with the final stops Kamikitadai in the north and Tama-Center in the south, it opens up a total of 19 stops. At a top speed of 65 km / h, the journey takes 36 minutes. The railway is electrified with 1500 V DC and secured with ATC and ATO . The route runs elevated on beams made of prestressed concrete . At the Chūō-Daigaku-Meisei-Daigaku stop there is a short section at ground level, which is followed by the 220 m long Tamakyūryō tunnel.
During the day, the train runs every ten minutes, in the morning every five to seven minutes and in the evening every seven to eight minutes. The monorail enables cross connections between the otherwise predominantly east-west oriented traffic corridors. The area passed through consists mainly of residential areas, which is why the train is used very heavily, especially during rush hour . The Tama Zoo and several universities are also being developed. Of particular importance are the Tachikawa-Kita and Tachikawa-Minami stops with transfer options to the Chūō and Nambu lines of the JR East railway company .
history
The traffic concept for the Tama region presented by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's urban development office in 1981 envisaged a route network with a total length of 93 km, but so far only a route of 16 km has been implemented. The section between Kamikitadai and Tachikawa-Kita went into operation on November 27, 1998. A little more than a year later, on January 10, 2000, the extension to the Tama Center followed .
In the medium term, the route from Kamikitadai is to be extended by 6.7 km to Hakonegasaki station in the city of Mizuho . This would open up Musashimurayama and create a connection to the Hachikō line . Two further extensions are planned from the Tama Center and should lead to Hachiōji and Machida .
