The Tama Zoological Park ( Jap. 多摩動物公園 , Tama Dobutsu kōen ) is the largest zoo of Tokyo . Located in the town of Hino , it opened on May 5, 1958, and covers an area of over 52.3 hectares . The zoo is divided into three ecological areas, the Asian garden, the African garden and the Australian garden. He also has an insectarium . In the respective gardens typical animals of the respective continent are shown.
Its most popular attraction is the lion enclosure, which visitors can drive through in a bus. Pieces of meat are hung on the bus and with a bit of luck you can watch the lions eat from ten centimeters away. Until 2015, the Tama Zoo was home to the oldest known snow leopard, Shynghyz .
The zoo is located in front of the Tama-Dōbutsukōen station on the Keiō Dōbutsuen line and the Tama monorail .
