Shynghyz ( Kazakh Шынғыс / Schynghys , Japanese. シ ン ギ ズ , Shingizu ) (born around December 1989 in Kazakhstan ; died on October 10, 2015 in the Tama Zoo ) was the oldest known snow leopard and an attraction of the until his death in October 2015 Tama Zoos in Tokyo Prefecture .

Life

Shynghyz was captured in the Central Asian high mountains of Kazakhstan when he was around 18 months old . He came to the Almaty Zoo , the oldest zoo in Kazakhstan, where he lived for ten years. It got its name after the Mongolian ruler Genghis Khan . The Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev gave it to the then Prime Minister of Japan Keizo Obuchi in 1999 as a symbol of friendship between the two countries. On October 13, 2000, Shynghyz was transferred to the Tama Zoo.

Shynghyz was used in breeding. He fathered a total of nine young animals that were brought to various zoos in Europe and Asia. Ena, his youngest daughter, arrived at the Toronto Zoo in September 2015 , the first offspring to be sent to North America. As the daughter of a snow leopard that used to live in the wild - hunting has been officially prohibited worldwide for a number of years for reasons of species protection - she should play an important role in the breeding program.

Shynghyz died of kidney failure at age 25 . He is considered to be the oldest captive snow leopard to date.

Every year, as an emergency exercise, the Tokyo Zoo rehearses how a dangerous predator breaks out and is recaptured. This is how the zoo is preparing for the eventuality that dangerous zoo animals escape their enclosures in an earthquake. In 2015, the role of the predator Shynghyz was played, he was portrayed in an animal costume by an employee of the zoo.
