The Toronto Zoo is a zoological garden in the Canadian city of Toronto . The zoo is located around 20 kilometers northeast of the city center on the Rouge River , on which the Rouge National Urban Park is located. With around 5000 animals - including around 16,000 invertebrates and fish - on an area of 287 hectares and around 10 kilometers of walking paths, it is one of the largest zoos in the world. Its area is structured according to zoogeographic continents. Annually, the Toronto Zoo is visited by approximately 1.2 million people.

history

The zoo dates back to an opening in 1888. Its original name was Riverdale Zoo and depicted the animals in dark cages in the form of a curiosity show. In 1963 the idea of building a new zoo came up for the first time. Eleven citizens then founded the Metropolitan Toronto Zoological Society in 1966 . A year later, the Rouge Park in Scarborough was considered as a possible place for a new zoo, so that in 1968 a feasibility study was carried out by the architect Raymond Moriyama . In 1970 construction began on the new zoological garden, which opened to the public on August 15, 1974 as the Metropolitan Toronto Zoo . The original area of the first park in 1888 was around 3 hectares and was converted into a municipal farm in 1978. In 1976 the zoo opened a 5.6 kilometer monorail called the Canadian Domain Ride , which was closed again in 1994 as a result of an accident with 37 injured visitors.

Snow leopard at Toronto Zoo

In 1980 and 1984 new facilities were added to the zoo with a children's zoo and facilities for gaur , African elephants , snow leopards and a pavilion for Indian rhinos . In 1985, Qinn Qinn and Shayan , a giant panda couple, were shown. The rarity of these animals attracted many visitors, breaking all previous visitor records. Over the years, other rare animals were added, such as B. the snub-nosed monkey 1986, koalas 1988 and 1996 and white lions 1995.

In 2003, due to the SARS epidemic , the zoo experienced a sharp drop in visitors, from which the zoo only recovered very slowly.
