Akishima ( Japanese 昭 島 市 , - shi ) is a city in the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo, west of Tokyo .

The Tama River flows through the city from west to southeast.

The city was founded on May 1, 1954 .

The Haijima Station is an important railway junction. This is where the Ōme line , the Itsukaichi line and the Hachikō line of JR East meet, as does the Seibu Haijima line of the Seibu Tetsudō . National road 16 runs through the city .
