Hinode ( Japanese 日 の 出 町 , Hinode-machi ) is a district city ( machi ) in Nishitama-gun ("West Tama District") in the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo . Due to the establishment of independent cities, it is now cut off from the other three remaining municipalities in the district.

geography

The eponymous Hinode-yama

Hinode lies on the western edge of the Kantō plain in the valley cut of the Hirai-gawa in the Okutama mountains. Most of the settlement and agricultural land is concentrated in a small, flat area on Hirai-gawa in the southeast (the former Hirai village) and the Hirai-gawa and -guno-gawa (former Ōguno village) valleys to the west of it. Apart from the valleys and some smaller side valleys, the larger north-western part of the municipality consists mainly of mountain forests. In the north, Hinode is bordered by the urban district Ōme , and in the south by Akiruno .

The Hirai-gawa rises in the west of the municipality and leaves it in the southeast, it flows into the Tama -gawa after 16.5 km in the urban area of Akiruno . In the west on the border with Ōme lies the 902 m high peak of Hinode- yama.

history

The municipality was formed in 1955 as Hinode- mura , as a village community, through the merger of the villages Hirai-mura ( 平井村 ) and Ōguno-mura ( 大久野村 ). Hinode became a town in 1974.

economy

In addition to agriculture, forestry and wood processing - Hinode is the nationwide leader in the manufacture of coffins - the cement industry settled in Hinode in order to use the local limestone deposits, but production has largely been relocated to other locations in recent decades. The retail group Æon opened a large shopping center in Hinode in 2007. It is located in the Miyoshino industrial area, which the municipality had been planning for the future motorway junction since the late 1980s.

traffic

In 2002, Hinode was connected to the motorway network: The Hinode interchange on the Shutoken chūō renraku jidōshadō (short ken'ō-dō , English Ken-O Expressway ) is located on the eastern edge of Hinode. Hinode does not have its own railway connection today, but the Itsukaichi line of the JR Higashi-Nihon runs not far south of the city limits through the neighboring Akiruno; At the time of the state railway , a small branch line Ōkuno was connected, but passenger traffic on this was stopped in 1971. Nishi-Tōkyō Bus, a company of the Keiō group, runs regular buses in the direction of Itsukaichi and Akigawa.
