Carl Hunnius Boarding School

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Carl Hunnius boarding school in Wyk auf Föhr was a private, Christian boarding school that existed from 1946 to 1972 and during this time looked after around 1540 pupils, 1130 boys and 410 girls. It was founded on May 15, 1946, initially as a boarding school. In 1949 the boarding school and school separated - the latter was nationalized (today: Eilun Feer Skuul ) - because in the first years of its existence the boarding school mainly accepted displaced and refugee children from the German east (including many Baltic Germans ) and - completely after the currency reform - was not able to maintain a modern school operation. The Carl Hunnius Boarding School saw itself as the successor to theBaltenschule Misdroy and named itself after its founder and long-time director Carl Hunnius (1873–1964). Until 1959, the boarding school was sponsored by the Baltic German lawyer Walter von Roth (1889–1969).

The boys boarding school

The boys' boarding school was on a large area on the south beach of the island. The "Haus Nordmark" was the main building of the boarding school, next to it there were two barracks; Another barrack building, the so-called “Vorwerk”, for the youngest boarders was located directly behind the promenade on Wyker Südstrand. The boarding school was headed from the autumn of 1946 to the summer of 1959 by Pastor Hans Lohmann (1909–1999), who had been the head of the Dune Castle boarding school at the Baltic School in Misdroy from 1934 to 1939. He had a decisive influence on the boys' boarding school, even after he left.

Among the boys there were the ranks: novice, novice , scholar and member of the chapter . These designations were deliberately reminiscent of the structure of religious orders . In addition to the boarding school director and the educators, the chapter management committee included selected boys from the upper classes, including the Primus who was entrusted with special tasks. You shared responsibility. The daily course was strictly regulated, e.g. B. through tough military roll calls before meals. Correspondingly strict discipline was observed and good manners were important. Comradeship was considered important.

The boarding school was particularly formative due to its diverse cultural offerings (including choir, concerts, theater, film, singing together) and its evangelical-Christian orientation (including devotions, prayers, visits to church services, confirmation classes by the boarding school director; Catholic boarders were encouraged to participate in devotions and in religious instruction outside the boarding school).

When Hans Lohmann left the boys' boarding school in 1959, Pastor Wolfgang Renter was his successor after a transition period, Pastor Friedrich-Karl Kurowski from 1962 to 1968 and Pastor Hans-Joachim Reinhardt from 1968 to 1972. The boarding school finally got into considerable financial difficulties, so that the sponsoring association, which had been predominantly made up of former pupils since 1959, could no longer guarantee the economic basis and it had to close on July 31, 1972.

The girls boarding school

The boarding school for girls, each with around 40 students, was headed by the Catholic teacher Annemarie Heyden (1894–1997) from Cologne. She also owned the building for the girls about 300 meters from the boys' boarding school. Among the girls there was the honorary rank of "home daughter" and the prime. The girls also took part in all the cultural events in the boys' boarding school. Ms. Heyden regularly organized afternoons for Catholic girls and boys to have tea together. The girls' department of the Carl Hunnius boarding school was closed in 1971 for economic reasons.

Alumni organization

In 1949, an alumni organization of the Carl Hunnius boarding school, called the “Association of Coats of Arms” and later organized as an association , was founded and held annual reunion meetings. This association supported financially needy former boarders and from 1959 endeavored to maintain the boarding school. Its club character was given up in 2012. In 1996, the connection brought a plaque for the boarding school on Gmelin-Strasse, where "Haus Nordmark" used to be. For the 55th anniversary of the boarding school, two very different books were published with memories of the boarding school days and their appreciation as well as lists of names of all students.
