Gerhard von Mickwitz

Gerhard Kurt Leopold von Mickwitz (born July 13, 1929 in Rossieny , Lithuania , † February 24, 2020 in Lüneburg ) was a German veterinarian and university professor .

Family and school attendance

His parents (Pastor Gottfried von Mickwitz and Agnes von Berg) come from old Baltic German families. After the family moved to East Prussia , Mickwitz attended school in Treuburg from 1935 to 1944 ; Before the end of the war, however, he was drafted into digging work and as a courier driver for the Air Force. He continued attending school from 1946 to 1950 at the Carl Hunnius boarding school in Wyk auf Föhr ; He passed his Abitur in 1951 in Berlin.

Mickwitz is born with Gabriele Sticinsky married; they have four children.

Study and job

Mickwitz began studying veterinary medicine in Hanover and moved to Munich for two semesters , where he became a member of the Baltic fraternity Fraternitas Dorpatensis in Munich; he completed his studies in Hanover with the state examination in 1957. After a trainee period, he received his doctorate in 1959 at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover to Dr. med. vet. He then became an assistant at the clinic for small cloven-hoofed animals and forensic medicine in Hanover and head of the outpatient clinic at the University of Veterinary Medicine. After completing his habilitation in 1968 in the field of “swine diseases”, he held various positions at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover. He was recognized as a specialist veterinarian for general practice and for pigs. In 1979 he was appointed to the chair for Pig Diseases and Forensic Veterinary Medicine at the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the Free University of Berlin . In order to enable the Berlin students enough practice in the care of livestock, he set up the Veterinary Ambulance Schwarzenbek of the Free University of Berlin as a branch ; After the turnaround and the restructuring of the university veterinary medicine in Berlin, the outpatient clinic was closed in 1997.

Animal welfare

He was particularly interested in animal welfare: he examined transport conditions; Stress, rheumatoid diseases and slaughterhouse conditions. On behalf of the European Community, from 1975 to 1979 he worked on a study on the quality of stunning types before slaughter and on animal welfare at the slaughterhouse in 9 EC countries. 1971–1981 he was a member of the expert group "Animal Welfare - Transport of Animals" at the Federal Ministry of Food in Bonn. Since 1988 he has been chairman of the Erna Graff Foundation for Animal Welfare in Berlin; In 2004 he became its honorary chairman. In 1993 Mickwitz initiated the establishment of the "Advisory and Training Institute for the careful handling of breeding and slaughter animals". In 1996 he received the “Dr. Wilma von Düring Research Award ”. In 2003 he was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany for his services to scientific animal welfare .

Post-employment activity

After his retirement in 1996, he regularly organized and led cultural and historical trips to the homeland of his ancestors in Estonia and Latvia for over 10 years.
