politics

After returning from South America, he began to be politically active in Hamburg in 1974. From 1978 to 1984 he was a member of the Hamburg parliament . As the successor to Birgit Breuel , he was the economic policy spokesman for the CDU. From 1979 to 2011 he performed leading tasks in the CDU's economic council (state board, federal board, presidium, deputy federal chairman).

Priorities of the political work:

  1. He pursued regulatory policy with the particular aim of not transferring the structures, which were partially deadlocked in western Germany, 1: 1 to the new federal states, but rather making "East Germany" a catalyst for necessary reforms through more flexibility, especially in labor law.
  2. In competition policy, he advocated the rapid internationalization of the competition system. He criticized the “wagon mentality” of politics and the Federal Cartel Office .
  3. In terms of energy policy , he opposed the planned construction of a nuclear reprocessing plant in Germany, against the vote of his party , primarily for economic reasons. At the same time, he advocated the exploration of a repository in Gorleben . In many publications and lectures he criticized the complete nuclear phase-out after the nuclear disaster in Fukushima and the highly subsidized expansion of renewable energies . He described the energy transition as an “attack on the competitiveness” of Germany as an industrial location.
