Birgit Breuel
Birgit Breuel (born September 7, 1937 in Hamburg-Rissen as Birgit Münchmeyer ) is a German politician ( CDU ), former president of the Treuhandanstalt and general commissioner of the Expo 2000 in Hanover , later active in numerous honorary offices.
biography
Birgit Münchmeyer comes from an originally Lower Saxon family of merchants and private bankers from Hamburg since 1816 and is the daughter of the businessman and banker Alwin Münchmeyer the Elder. J. (1908–1990), owner of the trading and banking house Münchmeyer & Co. in Hamburg and president of the DIHT , and Gertrud Nolte (1914–2007). On August 8, 1959, she married the Hamburg merchant Ernst-Jürgen Breuel (born October 7, 1931 in Hamburg). Her son Nikolaus was CEO of DB Fernverkehr AG until November 2010 .
Birgit Breuel first studied political science at the universities of Hamburg , Oxford and Geneva , but without a degree. In 1966 the trained retail saleswoman joined the CDU. From 1970 until her resignation on June 28, 1978, she was a member of the Hamburg Parliament . From 1978 to 1986 she was Lower Saxony's Minister of Economics and Transport , then Lower Saxony's Finance Minister until 1990 . After taking office, she was the first woman to receive the official title of minister .
In 1990 Breuel was elected to the management of the Treuhandanstalt , one year later she succeeded the murdered Detlev Rohwedder as President of the Treuhandanstalt. She left this office in 1995. Birgit Breuel was then General Commissioner of the World Exhibition Expo 2000 in Hanover . After that she mostly withdrew into her private life, but was still a member of several supervisory boards. She also takes care of the Philip Breuel Foundation, which was founded in 1990 on behalf of her deceased son, and which enables children from socially disadvantaged families to be creative and artistic.
Others
In 2009, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, ARD produced and broadcast a documentary about Breuel's work as the head of the trust. It bears the title The Trustee .
