Peter-Jürgen Schneider (born September 16, 1947 in Salzgitter-Hallendorf ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and was Lower Saxony's finance minister in Stephan Weil's cabinet from February 19, 2013 to November 21, 2017 .

Life

Training and professional positions

After training as an electrical mechanic , Peter-Jürgen Schneider acquired a degree as a state-certified technician specializing in electrical engineering. From 1970 to 1973 he worked as assistant to the head of the vocational training department at Stahlwerke Peine-Salzgitter AG , the core of today's Salzgitter AG .

In 1973 he headed the DGB vocational training center in Southeast Lower Saxony and was subsequently, from 1974 to 1978, managing director of political education in the SPD district of Braunschweig.

In 1979 Schneider returned to the Peine-Salzgitter steelworks, where he was head of the vocational training department until 1986 . From 1986 to 1996 Schneider was a freelance partner in an institute for vocational training planning.

Political career and public office

In 1963 Schneider joined IG Metall , three years later he became a member of the SPD. In 1972 he was elected to the Salzgitter City Council, of which he was a member until 1996. From June 1986 to February 1997 he was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament ( 11th , 12th and 13th electoral periods ), and from June 1990 until he left the state parliament he was deputy chairman of the state parliamentary group of the SPD.

In 1997 and 1998 Schneider was President of the Braunschweig District Government . In January 1999 he moved to the Lower Saxony State Chancellery as State Secretary, of which he was head until 2003.

Salzgitter AG

In 2003, Schneider joined the Executive Board of Salzgitter AG as Labor Director, where he was responsible for Human Resources and the Services Division until 2013.

Schneider was a member of the supervisory boards of various companies in the Salzgitter Group. He chaired the supervisory boards of SZST Salzgitter Service und Technik GmbH, Verkehrsbetriebe Peine-Salzgitter GmbH and Hansaport Hafenbetriebsgesellschaft mbH.

Other engagement

Peter-Jürgen Schneider was a member of the executive boards of the Steel Federation and the Steel Employers' Association. He was spokesman for the Lower Saxony / Bremen manager group of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung , member of the supervisory board of Projekt Region Braunschweig GmbH and member of the board of the Hustedter Heimvolkshochschule.

Lower Saxony Minister of Finance from 2013 to 2017

Schneider was appointed in October 2012 by the top candidate of the SPD for the 2013 state election, Stephan Weil, as a candidate for the office of finance minister in his shadow cabinet . After the election victory of the SPD and the Greens on January 20, 2013 and after the election of Stephan Weil as Prime Minister in the constituent session of the state parliament on February 19, 2013, Peter-Jürgen Schneider was sworn in as Finance Minister of Lower Saxony.

In this role he was chairman of the supervisory board of NORD / LB, a member of the supervisory board of Bremer Landesbank Kreditanstalt Oldenburg, Deutsche Messe AG and Salzgitter AG and a member of the board of directors of KfW. In addition, Schneider was chairman of the board of the collective bargaining association of German states (TdL) and in this function was a member of the senate of the Max Planck Society.

After the state elections in Lower Saxony in 2017 , the minister of finance was transferred to Reinhold Hilbers (CDU), who replaced Schneider on November 22, 2017.
