Akira Miyoshi

Akira Miyoshi ( Japanese 三 善 晃 Miyoshi Akira ; born January 10, 1933 in Suginami , Tokyo Prefecture ; † October 4, 2013 ) was a Japanese composer .

Career

Miyoshi initially studied French literature for four years at the University of Tokyo . In 1955 he received a scholarship and moved to the Conservatoire Superieure in Paris , where he studied composition with Henri Dutilleux . He graduated in 1957 on his return to Japan.

In 1953 he won first prize at the 22nd Japan Music Contest with his Sonata for Clarinet, Bassoon, and Piano . Numerous works have received awards and prizes in Japan and Europe. a. 1954 the Art Festival Promotion Prize of the Agency of Cultural Affairs , the Italia Prize , the 3rd Otaka Prize and the Palme Académique of the French government. From 1954 to 1995 he was President of Toho Gakuen University . He later was the manager of the Tokyo Metropolitan Festival Hall .

In March 1999 his first opera Faraway Sail about Hasekura Tsunenaga premiered with great success. This work was awarded the Suntory Music Foundation Prize.
