Adele (singer)
Adele Laurie Blue Adkins MBE (* 5. May 1988 in London , England ), better known as Adele [ədɛl] is a British pop , soul - jazz - and R & B - singer and songwriter . The Oscar , Golden Globe and fifteen-time Grammy winner has sold more than 100 million records to date, making her one of the most successful singers of the 21st century.
Life
Adele grew up as an only child with her single mother in the district of Tottenham in north London. Her father left the family when she was three years old. She has a younger half-brother on her father's side.
From the age of four Adele was fascinated by singing voices. She described the Spice Girls as an important influence in terms of their love and passion for music. She sang songs from the band at dinner parties as a child. At the age of nine, she moved to Brighton with her mother . Two years later they moved back to London; first to Brixton , then to a neighboring district in south London. After this move, she became interested in musicians like Pink , Aaliyah , Destiny's Child and Mary J. Blige .
From autumn 2011 she had a relationship with businessman Simon Konecki . Their son Angelo was born on October 19, 2012. After a five-year engagement period, Adele and Konecki confirmed that they had married, but withheld the date of the wedding anniversary. In March of the same year, the couple bought a house in East Grinstead, West Sussex, in the south of England . In April 2019, it was announced that Adele and her husband had split up.
Career
2006-2010
In 2006 Adele graduated from the BRIT School for Performing Arts - where she was in class with Leona Lewis and Jessie J - and then toured the UK with various musicians . She achieved great popularity through the website Myspace , to which she has been registered since December 31, 2004. A demo recording with three songs posted there by a friend led to the offer of a record deal by XL Recordings at the end of 2006.
This was followed by television appearances in Great Britain, including Later with Jools Holland on BBC Two and Friday Night with Jonathan Ross on BBC One .
With the release of the single Hometown Glory in autumn 2007, a larger audience became aware of them. In December, she received the BRIT Awards 'first-ever Critics' Choice award , which honors promising young talents. In the renowned BBC show "Sound of ...", which annually predicts which artists will make the breakthrough in the following year, she was voted number 1 on Sound of 2008 . The second single Chasing Pavements started in January 2008 at number 2 in the British charts and stayed there for three weeks. Her debut album 19 , an indication of her age, soared to the top of the album charts . Within a few weeks, the single was released in other European countries and entered the charts in many of them. In Norway , Chasing Pavements made it to first place in mid-March 2008 . Her songs are mostly about feelings, disappointments and thoughts from their last relationship.
Adele received the 2009 Grammys for "Best New Artist" and "Best Female Vocal Performance - Pop" for Chasing Pavements . With this title she was also nominated for “Song of the Year” and “Single of the Year”.
In June 2009 the album Love & War by the Australian R&B singer and songwriter Daniel Merriweather was released , with whom Adele had recorded the song Water and a Flame . In February 2010 the title My Same rose to number 61 in the charts in Germany . The trigger was Lena Meyer-Landrut's appearance on the casting show Our Star for Oslo , where she sang this title.
Since 2011
In February 2011 Adele reached number 1 in the German charts with her single Rolling in the Deep and her album 21 in the same week . At the end of August 2011, the video won three MTV Video Music Awards .
In her home country Great Britain her releases were represented twice in the top 5 of the single charts on February 20, 2011 :
Someone Like You in # 1 and Rolling in the Deep in # 4; and twice in the top 5 of the album charts ( 21 at number 1 and 19 at number 4). The Beatles last succeeded in doing this in 1964.
As the first solo artist, she was able to stay at the top of the album charts for a total of 24 weeks with her album 21 . After appearing at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards , Someone Like You became Adele's second number one hit in the United States. The third single, Set Fire to the Rain , achieved 6th place in Germany, 5th place in Austria, 4th place in Switzerland and even 1st place in the USA due to download sales alone . This makes her the first British solo artist to reach the top of the Billboard charts with three singles on an album. Someone Like You also became a top 5 hit in Germany and Austria, and in Switzerland the song became Adele's second number one hit after Rolling in the Deep .
The album 19 had initially had little success outside of the UK. However, after the release of 21 , it rose in the charts in many countries, mostly reaching its highest position.
In November 2011, Adele had an operation on her vocal cords in Boston . A polyp had caused bleeding that had to be treated microsurgically. Her first live DVD, Live at the Royal Albert Hall , was released that same month .
In November 2011 it was announced that 21 was the most downloaded album in Germany up to this point with over 140,000 downloads. Adele is also the first British female artist to sell three million albums in the UK within a year with 21 . 21 is also the 21st century best-selling album in the UK. In the USA the album was sold over ten million times (as of November 2012).
In 2012 Adele sang the theme song for the 23rd James Bond film Skyfall . The song was released on October 5, 2012 - exactly 50 years after the premiere of the first Bond film - at 12:07 a.m. British summer time. The song was able to reach first place in the German and Swiss single charts. Adele and her co-writer Paul Epworth won a Golden Globe , an Oscar and a Grammy for Best Movie Song for Skyfall .
In October 2012, the singer announced that she would devote herself mainly to her private life over the next few years and not want to release a new album for the time being.
On November 20, 2015, the album 25 was released , the title of which again referred to the age of the singer. On October 23, the first single was released with Hello .
In 2016 Adele went on a world tour, including to Germany. After 121 concerts on this tour, she canceled the last 2 (of 4) planned performances at Wembley on medical advice due to problems with her vocal cords.
reception
“Adele is [...] one of the greatest talents that the island kingdom has to offer in this millennium. She can sing fabulous and write much better songs. "
“The young Londoner convinced not only with her strong voice, which smoothly varied the timbre and intonation. The repertoire and the arrangements were also remarkable. "
The satirical politician Lord Buckethead propagates the nationalization of Adele as a central demand of his party.
