Polyp (swelling)
Polyps are macroscopically visible, mostly pedunculated protrusions of the mucosa ( mucous membrane ).
Descriptive
The medical word polyp is purely descriptive (e.g. nasal mucosal polyp - inflammatory; colon polyp - neoplastic ) and says nothing about the etiology or the dignity , i.e. H. a neoplastic polyp can be both good and malignant . The differentiation can only take place in the fine tissue after removal.

Intestinal polyps
Polyps often appear as adenomas in the intestine. There they can be removed as part of a colonoscopy using a polypectomy , as there is a risk of developing colon cancer ( adenoma-carcinoma sequence ).
The endoscopic removal of colon polyps with a flexible instrument was first reported by P. Deyhle at the University of Erlangen on March 13, 1971. This laid the foundation for preventive colonoscopy in Germany . At the same time, this was the beginning of operative endoscopy.
Polyposis
The appearance of many polyps is known as polyposis . Such a finding is possible in the uterus ( polyposis uteri ), the stomach ( polyposis ventriculi ), the paranasal sinuses as a nasal polyp ( polyposis nasi et sinuum ), in the mouth and throat area ( Peutz-Jeghers syndrome ) and in the context of several clinical pictures in the intestine ( Polyposis coli ).
Demarcation
Enlarged tonsils are called adenoids . They are common in children and are colloquially known as "polyps".
