Rolling in the Deep is a song by the British singer Adele . It was released on November 29, 2010 as the first single from their second album 21 . The song was written by Adele and Paul Epworth .

Rolling in the Deep became a number one hit in Belgium , Germany , Italy , the Netherlands and Switzerland and reached the top ten in Austria , Denmark , Ireland , New Zealand , Norway and the UK . In the US , the single reached # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has sold over 5,500,000 digital units in the US to date.

Composition and content

The song is by soul beats , piano - chords (played by Neil Cowley ) and backup singers worn. Adele's singing has been described as " reminiscent of Wanda Jackson's blues singing". According to Nadine Cheung from the aolradioblog , the song is sung from the perspective of a spurned lover who is finally able to see the light, but - despite regretful feelings - reconciliation is not possible. ("[The song] is sung from the perspective of a scorned lover, who is finally able to see the light, but despite regretful sentiments, reconciliation is not an option here."). According to her own testimony, this song represents a settlement with her ex-boyfriend who left her for another woman.

criticism

From music critics was Rolling in the Deep reviewed overwhelmingly positive. Especially Adele's strong and soulful singing, but also the lyrics of the song were emphasized. The Sun described the song as "an epic pop anthem, with a piano melody and strong vocals that you would expect from a veteran who has been making music for 20 years". About.com's Bill Lamb gave the song 5 stars out of 5. He said: “ Rolling In the Deep […] doesn’t waste time presenting the soulful blues of her voice. After five seconds she starts to sing and the emotions suddenly reach the audience. Rolling in the Deep will help individuals suppress their lovesickness . With the emotions triggered by the melody and its singing, you will count the days until you can hear the entire album ”. Billboard's Jason Lipshutz praised the "fine refrain " and felt that the song "showed the strongest side of Adele's singing." Rolling Stones Barry Walters gave the song a positive rating: " Rolling in the Deep shows the 22-year-old in a gospel-blues genre".

Music video

The music video for Rolling in the Deep had its world premiere on December 3, 2010 on Channel 4 . It begins in an empty room, in the middle of which Adele is sitting on a chair and starting to sing. The soulful music of the title describes the atmosphere of the video. During the video some scenes are shown in which glasses with water beat the rhythm and plates are thrown against a screen. In one room, a dancer is dancing with a stick that stirs up dust. Next you can see the drummer on the wall . At the end of the video, fountains of fire are ignited over a plastic model.

The video won four MTV Video Music Awards in late August 2011 . It also won the Best Short Form Music Video category at the 2012 Grammy Awards .

Appearances

On December 3, 2010, Adele sang Rolling In the Deep on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and on January 17, 2011 on Alan Carr: Chatty Man and on January 21, 2011 in the finale of The Voice of Holland , as a medley with Make You Feel my love . On January 26, 2011, Adele sang the title on the French program Le Grand Journal (Canal +). The song is part of the soundtrack of the film I Am Number Four from 2011. In February 2012, Adele sang the song again for the first time - after a long break due to her vocal cord surgery - at the Grammy Awards . In 2016, Adele Donald Trump banned the use of the piece in his election campaign.

Cover versions

  • Linkin Park covered the song for the first time at the Linkin Park Underground Summit fan event before a concert in Hamburg . They then played it at their concert at the iTunes Festival. In contrast to their usual style, the instrumentation of the band is unusually minimalistic. The song peaked at number 42 on the UK charts.
  • The British band Overtones covered the song in 2011 for their album Good Old Fashioned Love Platinum .

  • The American rapper Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) also covered the song in 2011. The only verse describes the behavior between him and his ex-girlfriend after their breakup.
  • The American Souldiva Aretha Franklin recorded the song in 2014 for her album Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics .
  • The American Classic rock band Greta Van Fleet published January 24, 2018 cover of on the purely digital in Spotify published Single Spotify singles .
