Minutes to Midnight (. English for "Minutes to Midnight") is the third studio album of American Metal - band Linkin Park . It was released on May 11, 2007 on Warner Brothers Records .

The title refers to the Doomsday Clock , on which the "Minutes to Midnight" are displayed, which is a measure of the time remaining until the world is destroyed by nuclear weapons. At the time the title was announced, the clock stood at five minutes to midnight. Mike Shinoda stated that the album had several meanings: “Don't take this too literally. There are different meanings, most of them are metaphorical. ”And“ There is definitely a reference to the Doomsday Clock ... the apocalypse ... a metaphor for death and rebirth, but it could also refer to the music industry, so a bit ironic . "

Emergence

For this album Linkin Park has chosen producer Rick Rubin , who has already worked on albums by artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers , Metallica , AC / DC , System of a Down , Jay-Z , Rage Against the Machine and more.

Rapper Mike Shinoda had originally recorded significantly more new songs with the band, but the album only holds a selection of twelve. The song No Roads Left , which is not sung by Bennington but by Shinoda, was created during the recording process and was available on iTunes for the pre-order version of Minutes to Midnight . In January 2008, just in time for the European tour, the song was also available on CD with a new edition of Minutes to Midnight , the tour edition. In 2006, the songs Qwerty and Announcement Service Public were officially made available to the Linkin Park Underground fan club on the LP Underground 6 CD. Both songs were also released in 2008 on the EP Songs from the Underground . Across the Line was released in 2009 on LP Underground 9: Demos , which is the only LPU CD that has ever been released. A digital version was only released on January 15, 2013 with the iTunes Deluxe Edition of Minutes to Midnight as a second bonus track alongside No Roads Left . The song Blackbirds , which was released in 2010, also dates from this time.

North Shore Beach and Yacht Club Ruins (2009)

Chester Bennington was working at the same time on the album Out of Ashes , which he released with his band Dead by Sunrise in autumn 2009. This should originally appear earlier. It reflects many of the emotions Bennington experienced from breaking up with his ex-wife Samantha Olit. These feelings shouldn't be addressed with a Linkin Park album. 1999 already on the Hybrid Theory EP songs like And One and Part of Me as well as Papercut on Hybrid Theory , which deal with the consequences of Bennington's drug use, a psychosis .

The front and back of the cover show black and white photos of the band near the ruins of the North Shore Beach and Yacht Club on the Salton Sea in North Shore (California) .

publication

The planned release date has been postponed a total of four times. It was originally announced for summer 2006, then moved back to autumn 2006 and then to early 2007. It was actually released on May 11th, 2007. The constant delays are due to the constant re-recordings of the band.

The first single, What I've Done , was released digitally on May 14, 2007. The second single, Bleed It Out , was released in July 2007, the German video premiere took place on July 31, 2007 on TRL . The third single, Shadow of the Day , was released on November 23, 2007; the German video premiere took place on October 17, 2007 on Rockzone (MTV).

The other singles were Given Up and Leave Out All the Rest . Both came out over a year after the album.

Musical style

Band member Chester Bennington stated in an interview that the Nu-Metal style had largely disappeared from this album ; only in Given Up , Bleed It Out , No More Sorrow and partly in What I've Done can their “old style” be recognized. With this album the band wants to convince with a new style. This differs from the previous albums Hybrid Theory (2000) and Meteora (2003) u. a. insofar as individual songs are sung almost exclusively by Chester Bennington or Mike Shinoda. Linkin Park thus underlines the statement made before the release that they want to "start over" with the new album.

Texts

In addition, it should be noted that until the release of the album, the lyrics of the band remained completely free of insults and fecal language with a few exceptions. That has now changed, too, and Minutes to Midnight is Linkin Park's first album to receive the Parental Advisory sticker for adult content. In addition, the new album also offers political content for the first time, such as For example, in the songs Hands Held High (the band criticizes American war policy), No More Sorrow (an "anti-Bush song") and The Little Things Give You Away (here they criticize the government's incorrect behavior during the hurricane -Katrina disaster ).
