Papercut is a song by the American nu-metal band Linkin Park . On June 18, 2001, it was released as the third single from Hybrid Theory in the UK . The single was released worldwide on January 28, 2002, but not in the United States. It reached number 14 in the British and number 49 in the German singles charts .
background
Papercut is about the mental health problems of a person suffering from psychosis . This is expressed in the song mainly through the description of paranoid delusions. The first lines of the song, rapped by Mike Shinoda , are Why does it feel like night today? / Something in here's not right today / Why am I so uptight today? / Paranoia's all I got left . Between the rap verses, Chester Bennington sings a chorus. Papercut is a typical example of the rock / rap combination on Hybrid Theory . As with A Place for My Head and Forgotten , the bassist is exceptionally Ian Hornbeck, who was never an official member of the band.
Bennington named Papercut as one of his favorite Linkin Park songs. The band still plays the song regularly at concerts today.
The song was used for the remix Ppr: Kut from the remix album Reanimation . It was also used in the Big Pimpin '/ Papercut mashup . The song Sold My Soul to Yo Mama , which can be found on the EP Songs from the Underground , also contains a sample from Papercut .
Music video
The music video was shot by Nathan Karma Cox and band member Joe Hahn. It shows the band playing in a kind of haunted house. On the wall there is a drawing by Mike Shinoda of a baby, which is also shown on the Xero demo tape. In a darkened kitchen next to it, eerie characters can be seen, including a human-like one who may represent the paranoid person the song is about. This creature moves extremely fast and looks tormented, and it dashes through the bright room once at lightning speed. Gradually dragonflies begin to buzz from the dark to the light room, objects move and the lights flicker. Rob Bourdon, strangely the only one who doesn't play an instrument, seems to be the first to notice the strange happenings while the others are busy with their instruments, rap or singing. Brad Delson and Dave “Phoenix” Farrell play acoustic guitars, although heavy, distorted electric guitars can be heard in the song. After the screen went black for a moment shortly before the end, the band has disappeared, only the instruments remain.
