One Step Closer is a song by American nu-metal - band Linkin Park . On September 28, 2000 it was released as the first single from the debut album Hybrid Theory . It stayed on the US charts for a total of 18 weeks.
background
After Kyle Christener left the band as part of the name change from Hybrid Theory to Linkin Park , Scott Koziol was hired as the new bass player. He played a key role in the creation of One Step Closer . It became a huge success: four weeks before the official release, the song was on heavy rotation on all major US radio stations . One Step Closer also became the soundtrack for The Experiment , released by WEA. The song is stylistically similar to some songs from the Hybrid Theory era , such as Carousel and Part of Me and And One , which are included on the Hybrid Theory EP released a year earlier . Similarities both instrumentally and in terms of content can also be found in the songs Papercut and With You , which are on the same album.
A demo version of One Step Closer is called Plaster .
Instrumental design
Only a single electric guitar can be heard at the beginning of the song . Simple power chords are played; One Step Closer is considered a beginner's piece by guitarists. The electric guitar is supported by massive drumming . The overall impression can be described as disturbed , the song has almost no quiet parts. Every now and then record scratches are recorded. The singing is rather calm in the stanzas, but can be best described in the chorus with aggressive shouting . Bennington screams towards the end .
Text design
One Step Closer is written from the perspective of an outsider. Chester Bennington tries to make himself heard and to express his pent-up emotions. In One Step Closer, these consist mainly of anger. The text makes it clear that Bennington was exposed to massive bullying : Everything you say to me / takes me one step closer to the edge, and I'm about to break! In the bridge, shut up is shouted all the time , which highlights the longed-for stop to bullying and the anger. Bennington sings or screams the song alone throughout, only at live concerts he is supported by Mike Shinoda , as the vocal soundtracks are copied on top of each other in some parts of the studio recording.

Music video
Joe Hahn developed a concept for the video. The original version of the video was originally intended to be recorded at a live concert with fans, similar to the video for Faint . The final video was directed by Gregory Dark , and the recordings took place in a 19 m deep abandoned LA subway tunnel in Los Angeles adjacent to an abandoned hospital. Scott Koziol, who wasn't actually a member of the band, can be seen in the music video. The only Linkin Park music video, One Step Closer was recorded in 480p only and is not available in HD.
