Hybrid Theory ( English for "mixed theory") is the first EP by the US Nu-Metal and alternative rock band Linkin Park , then still under the band name Hybrid Theory . The EP was released in the USA on May 1, 1999 with a circulation of around 1,000 as an in-house production. In 2001 the EP wasre-released in a limited editionwith minor changes for the Linkin Park Underground fan club.
Emergence
The CD was recorded without today's bassist David Farrell , who was taking a break. Kyle Christener was hired as a replacement.
With the help of Jeff Blue, the EP was financed by the Zomba Label Group . However, the band sold the EP with little success, so they began to distribute the CDs for free for promotion. A street team helped out at the time. This was also sent further demo CDs, which are very valuable today.
Cover design
The CD cover is a fold cover and shows the two sides of a baby. On the right side of the cover, which can also be seen from the outside, the baby's head is shown asleep in a shade of brown. When you open the CD, the left side of the cover comes out, which shows the baby in a decayed state. It has opened its mouth, from which a forked tongue and sharp teeth protrude. The eye is pupilless and wide open. This left cover page is kept in a purple shade. A kind of heart can be seen between the two sides. The baby can also be seen in the 2001 music video for Papercut .
The booklet contains the ultrasound image of a fetus and the text:
"After eight months, she was sure of one thing: that the baby's future would be determined by the convergence of its divided past."
Hybrid Theory is listed as the producer . In the 2001 re-release , the text and ultrasound image have been removed, and Mike Shinoda is identified as the producer .

Re-use
Although no songs from the EP were included in the standard version of the debut album of the same name, Hybrid Theory , some were released over the years as B-sides, as bonus tracks or on a fan club album.
A remake of the title High Voltage is a B-side of the debut single One Step Closer from 2000, but also a bonus track of several versions of Hybrid Theory . A remix was also released on Reanimation , H! Vltg3 , which was released as the double A-side of a single with Pts.of.Athrty . This reached the top 10 of the UK Top 40 . At the beginning and at the end of the song Nobody's Listening a sample of the line “ Coming at you from every side ” was used.
Step Up is a B-side of the single In the End, Pt. 2 from 2001. Samples of these were also used in Kyur4 th Ich , the remixed version of Cure for the Itch , which appeared on the remix album Reanimation , released in 2002 , and in It's Goin 'Down (X-Ecutioners feat. Mike Shinoda & Joe Hahn) used.
In 2004 the band played a medley during the Projekt Revolution tour , consisting of Step Up , Nobody's Listening and It's Goin 'Down . This live version was also included on the fourth edition of the fan club CD series, Linkin Park Underground 4.0 .
And One and Part of Me , including Ambient / Secret , came on the EP Songs from the Underground in 2008 .
