Michael Kenji "Mike" Shinoda (born February 11, 1977 in Agoura Hills , California ) is an American musician . He is a rapper , singer , keyboardist and guitarist and a founding member of Linkin Park . He is also called The Glue by the band members .

Life

Shinoda's father is American of Japanese descent while his mother has European roots. Shinoda grew up with his younger brother Jason in Agoura Hills, a suburb of Los Angeles . Shinoda was very fond of drawing and learned to play classical piano at the age of six, but experimented with jazz , blues and hip-hop at the age of 13 . At school he met the guitarist Brad Delson know and formed with him and another schoolmate, the drummer Rob Bourdon, the band Xero during high school in 1996.

Mike Shinoda enrolled at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, studying illustration and graphic design . He made friends with the artist and DJ Joseph Hahn, who shortly afterwards joined the turntables of Shinoda's band Xero. Brad Delson's roommate, bassist David "Phoenix" Farrell, completed the band.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts In Illustration in 1998, Shinoda worked as a graphic designer but continued touring with Xero. Only after the addition of Chester Bennington in 1999 did the band change their name to Hybrid Theory, which was later the title of Linkin Park's first album. Due to possible legal problems (there was already another band under this name) a second renaming was made and an agreement was reached on Linkin Park. This name goes back to Lincoln Park in Santa Monica , which today has a different name. Linkin Park signed her recording deal with Warner Bros. Records . On October 24, 2000, the first album called Hybrid Theory was released. Together with Hahn, Shinoda was involved in the artwork as well as the album production, mixing and other technical details.

He also designed a. a. the album cover of the debut album 2000 Fold by the rap band Styles of Beyond . In 2001, Shinoda and his bandmates formed Linkin Park Underground (LPU), Linkin Park's official fan club. On their website, fans all over the world have the opportunity to exchange information about upcoming projects, concerts or publications. Linkin Park also founded their concert project Projekt Revolution in 2001 , which initially toured exclusively in the USA to support bands that combine rock with hip-hop. However, the great success in 2008 led to an expansion to Europe and at the same time to being able to support the band's aid organization, Music for Relief . Mike Shinoda and Brad Delson founded the Machine Shop Recordings music label in 2002 .

In 2004 Shinoda started a scholarship at the Art Center College of Design. It is financed u. a. from selling his work on his website. In 2009 he received an honorary doctorate in humane letters from the Art Center.

In 2005 the debut album The Rising Tied of his side project Fort Minor was released . It was produced by Jay-Z , who previously worked on Linkin Parks Collision Course (2004).

In 2008, Shinoda's second public exhibition, Glorious Excess (BORN), took place at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. A second installation in this series (Glorious Excess (DIES)) followed in January 2009.

In 2018 Shinoda's solo debut album Post Traumatic was released.
