In the End is a song by the American nu-metal band Linkin Park . It was the fourth and final single from the debut album Hybrid Theory on October 9, 2001, Warner Bros. released. By reaching number two on the US Billboard charts , the single became Linkin Park's most successful there. There are two remixes, Enth E Nd (from Reanimation ) and Izzo / In the End (with Jay-Z , from Collision Course ), both of which were released as promo singles.

Emergence

The song was originally written and named as a poem by Chester Bennington , but has been rewritten and adapted several times to fit the album. So there was also a rap part by Mike Shinoda .

Earlier demo recordings of the song had the working title Untitled or The Untitled . One such version from 1999 appeared on the exclusive fan club album Linkin Park Underground Eleven in 2011 .

Music video

The music video was shot by Nathan "Karma" Cox and band member and DJ Joe Hahn . It was the first of many music videos directed by Joe Hahn. The background of the video was shot in the California desert, but the band was filmed in the studio during Ozzfest 2001. The finished version was made with the help of CGI .

In the video, Mike Shinoda raps in a desert that is ultimately overgrown by grasses after the onset of rain. Because the lyrics of the song are very negative, the video should show the opposite development, in that the world becomes a more beautiful place there, explains Nathan Cox. The rest of the band plays or sings on a gigantic statue, which is very similar to the colossal statue of Ramses II , also in the desert. At the same time, a whale flies through the sky, which can be seen clearly throughout the video. The idea comes from Joe Hahn, who explained that the whale living in the sea stands as a contrast to the dry desert. He also said that the video, like the song, represents the cycle of life.

The video won the 2002 MTV Video Music Award in the Best Rock Video category.
