The song lexicon , published by the Center for Popular Culture and Music at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in cooperation with the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences , Faculty of Social and Cultural Studies , analyzes international songs in their popular cultural context from the beginning of the sound recording. It contains information about the band , the creation of the song as well as its context, content and reception. In addition to the analysis of text, melody and harmony, the focus is on the question of the audiovisual staging of the performers / band through sound, image and performance. The song lexicon is edited by the acting head of the Center for Popular Culture and Music Michael Fischer, Fernand Hörner and Christofer Jost.

In this order, the articles contain information about:

  1. Genesis and publication history of the song with information on the band line-up, recording circumstances, producers, any single release, music clips, first live performance.
  2. Classification in the historical, political or sociocultural context, which explains the possible textual or musical references in an interpretive way and illuminates the production and reception of the song against this background.
  3. Analysis of the song in terms of text, music, sound, audiovisuality and image of the band / musician, assuming an inseparable interplay of these elements.
  4. Reception in terms of its commercial success or its (post) effects (charts, radio airplay, music criticism, importance for subcultures, anthologization through republication, compilations etc.), its further processing (as cover, sample, film music etc.) and its importance for other songs.
