A Thousand Suns ( English for. "A thousand suns") is the fourth studio album of American rock band Linkin Park . It was released on September 10, 2010 on Warner Brothers Records . It ranked # 2 on Billboard's Best Hard Rock Albums of 2010.

Emergence

Mike Shinoda , David Farrell, and Joseph Hahn started working on two songs in October 2008. They were planning a concept album , which initially unsettled Chester Bennington . He eventually got used to the idea and said it was an inspiring idea that they could use to publish a lot of things they wanted to write about. He also announced that studio recording was scheduled to start in December 2008 and release in mid-2009. At the end of March 2009, however, Shinoda wrote on his blog that the band hoped that Bennington's album Out of Ashes would be out in the fall and that they could bring the new Linkin Park album out in the spring of 2010.

content

Quotes from important men in history were used in the album. In the song The Radiance there is an excerpt from an interview with Robert Oppenheimer , a physicist and developer of the atomic bomb, in Wisdom, Justice, and Love a speech by Martin Luther King on the Vietnam War and in Wretches and Kings an excerpt from a speech by Mario Savio , a civil rights activist to hear.
Several songs on the album overlap in the lyrics, including the two songs The Requiem and The Catalyst and the songs Fallout and Burning in the Skies .

As in previous Linkin Park albums such as Minutes to Midnight (2007), several transitions between songs take place smoothly, also with the military-style Empty Spaces and the subsequent When They Come for Me, driven by a complex drum track .

The first single, The Catalyst , was announced for August 2, 2010. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the single was only released on August 27, 2010.

Just one month after The Catalyst was released , Linkin Park made the title Wretches and Kings available as an MP3 download to those who had pre-ordered the album A Thousand Suns via the band's homepage. The second single is the song Waiting for the End , for which a 30-second demo version was put online on September 3, 2010. The single was finally released on October 1, 2010. The next single, Burning in the Skies , was released on March 18, 2011, but the single did not appear in the United States. As with its predecessors, Iridescent also released a song by Linkin Park as a soundtrack single for the third film in the Transformers series. The single was released two weeks before the soundtrack album on May 27, 2011. On June 17, 2011 the live DVD A Thousand Suns + was released . It contains a recording of the concert on November 7, 2010 near the Puerta de Alcalá in Madrid, both on DVD and in MP3 format. The studio version of A Thousand Suns is also included.

It has been described as a masterpiece by many critics, but in some cases the album has also been heavily criticized because it is very different from the original Nu-Metal sound of the band.

In December 2010, A Thousand Suns received the “Kulturnews Award” from kulturnews magazine as “Best Record 2010” . The company Allmusic gave two and a half stars out of five. The site metacritic average rating of 66%, which corresponds to generally favorable reviews (German: mostly positive reviews).

Laut.de writes: "Compulsive innovations at the expense of one's own identity have never been successful."

Plattentests.de also criticizes the new style: "It is by no means always the case that the most innovative is automatically the most courageous."
