The Catalyst is a song by the American band Linkin Park , which was released on August 2, 2010. The song is the first single from the album A Thousand Suns , which was released on September 8, 2010.
The Catalyst has been featured in various video games and commercials, including Medal of Honor , Guitar Hero, and advertising on the Discovery Channel .
composition
The song begins with an electronic beat that also has techno influences, followed by scratching and then Chester Bennington's vocals. Later guitars are added, whereby the whole song is kept musically as well as lyrically gloomy (“God bless us everyone / We're a broken people living under loaded gun / And it can't be outfought / It can't be outdone / It can't be outmatched / It can't be outrun "). After three and a half minutes, a bridge begins, first sung by Mike Shinoda and then sung together , in which the words "Lift me up / Let me go" are repeated several times.
Music video
The music video for The Catalyst was released on August 26, 2010. Directed by leading DJ of Linkin Park, Joseph Hahn. The video uses an abridged version of the song.
In the video, the band members are in a destroyed and deserted city shrouded in fog, with Mike Shinoda's face mostly in the shade through a hood and Chester Bennington being shown half submerged in the water in some scenes. There are also people fleeing who throw colored powder at people wearing gas masks.

Trivia
- The album title comes from the line “Will we burn inside the fire of a thousand suns?” (German: “Will we burn in the fire of a thousand suns?”).
- Some lines of the song already appear in the album intro The Requiem with a distorted voice.
- The line of text “Lift me up / Let me go” also occurs in Jornada del Muerto , albeit in Japanese (持 ち 上 げ て 、 解放 し て).
