In Germany it is the second single, but internationally it is the fourth after Burn It Down , Lost in the Echo (Great Britain) and Powerless (Japan). Although the song made it into the German airplay charts as a promo single at the end of 2012 , the single was only released on February 1, 2013. It contains Lost in the Echo (KillSonik Remix) as a B-side . A download EP, which in addition to the remix also includes two live tracks, was released on March 22, 2013.

composition

Castle of Glass has been compared to the style of A Thousand Suns . Loudwire described it as a dark song that combines different elements of electronic rock and sounds unique. Hitflix praises the beginning as an ingenious " chugging " and recognizes influences from country music . Others described the song as experimental, atmospheric, poetic, or dreamy.

Music video

The music video was created in collaboration with the video game Medal of Honor: Warfighter and also contains footage from it. It was released on YouTube on October 10, 2012. It uses an alternative mix of the song, just like Iridescent (2011).

The video is about a boy and his mother who learn from employees of the United States Navy SEALs that the father was killed in action. While they are grieving, the SEALs comfort them. Again and again they switch to the band that play in a storm, with broken glass circling them. Chester Bennington takes one of them out of the air and looks at it. In between, fight scenes from the video game are shown. The boy later finds a hat that belonged to his father, and a preview shows him wearing the hat as an adult, which implies that he will follow in his father's footsteps and serve in the special unit himself. Towards the end, a girl suffers the same fate, but she too has to be comforted. At the very end, when the band moves away from the viewer, the following quote appears:

"All great things are simple, and many can be expressed in single words: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope."

"All great things are simple and many can be expressed in single words: freedom, justice, honor, duty, grace, hope."

reception

Castle of Glass received mixed to positive reception from critics. While some praised the lyrics and atmosphere, others criticized the song's passivity.

Charts

In Germany, Castle of Glass is Linkin Park's fifth top ten single after Numb / Encore (2004), What I've Done (2007), New Divide (2009) and Burn It Down (2012). This enabled them to extract two top ten singles from the same album for the first time. In Austria, Castle of Glass shares the title of the highest-ranked Linkin Park single with New Divide thanks to second place . Outside of the German-speaking area, however, the single was only able to develop into a hit in a few countries.
