Living Things ( English for "living creatures"), the fifth studio album by the US rock - band Linkin Park . It was released on Warner Brothers Records on June 20, 2012.

Origin and background

In June 2011, Chester Bennington announced that they had been working on a fifth studio album for two months. The magazine Kerrang! he said that a new musical style is being sought for that. According to the band, this will combine the rap and rock elements of their first two albums with the electronic style of A Thousand Suns . Shinoda denied that the album would again be more rock guitar-heavy. He said the "return to Hybrid Theory" was misunderstood, they didn't want to go back to the album but to the band at the time, with the same attitude and energy from then.

As with the last two albums, Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns , Rick Rubin is again producer. He said there was significant progress in development compared to the other albums at this point in time. They typically meet once a week to talk about songs the band has developed. In addition, Bennington revealed to Rolling Stone in July 2011 that an 18-month rhythm would be sought for further albums. New material will continue to be produced, even during tours. In September he announced in another interview for MTV that the band was still only in the early stages of production.

In March 2012, Brad Delson said the album was slated for mid-year. Bennington and Shinoda presented five songs from Living Things to Spin magazine in April and also announced a feature for the album with musician Owen Pallett . They also said that this time the lyrics will be more personal and that a lot will be about relationships; unlike A Thousand Suns, whose texts often had political content. On April 15, 2012, Mike Shinoda announced on his blog that the album would be called Living Things . One day later Linkin Park presented the album cover and also announced that the album should be released on June 26th, in Germany it is announced for June 22nd. Linkin Park also published the track list and tour dates for the Honda Civic Tour together with Incubus . On June 25, the Berlin concert of the tour from the Admiralspalast on June 5 was shown in a special broadcast in more than 500 US cinemas.

For the design of the cover - both of the album and the single Burn It Down  - a 360 ° body scanner was used , with which all band members were digitized and combined into the characters that can ultimately be seen on the releases.

A global scavenger hunt began on May 9th and Shinoda said there would be a reward at the end. On May 24th, the song Lies Greed Misery celebrated its radio premiere on BBC Radio 1 . A fan received a USB stick with the song in MP3 format and was given permission to upload the song to the fansite LPAssociation.com and make it available for download.

In 2013 there were two re-releases of Living Things . On February 8th, the Australian Tour Edition was released with an alternative cover like the Minutes to Midnight European Tour Edition . This time the bonus tracks are on a separate CD. Living Things + , which follows the concept of A Thousand Suns + , has also been available since March 29th by including a DVD. The recordings are from the concert in the Admiralspalast, Berlin.

Single releases

On March 28, Mike Shinoda said in a video message from the set for the Burn It Down video that the track would be the first single to be released on April 16, 2012 and broadcast to the radio. From April 6th, the band put puzzles on the official website for six days, which together ultimately resulted in the cover artwork for the single. Since April 12, parts of the song could also be unlocked through a game. The video, which premiered on MTV on May 24th, was directed by band DJ Joe Hahn.

On August 29th, the music video for the second single Lost in the Echo was released . The download single was available in the UK since October 5th. However, the single was taken off the market and re-released on October 19 in a modified version.

The music video for Castle of Glass was released on October 10, 2012. It was created in collaboration with the video game Medal of Honor: Warfighter . The same day the song was released as a promo single . He was able to place himself in the German airplay charts before the end of the year . However, the CD single wasn't released until February 1, 2013.

In Japan, Powerless was released on October 31, 2012 as a download single exclusively via iTunes.

The English Kerrang! however, stated that Living Things sounded like a band for a long time, which had great talent, but did not know in which direction to move. Laut.de spoke of only one great song and various total failures; the look in the rearview mirror longed for by many fans after the more experimental previous album A Thousand Suns was only a fleeting one. The magazine Focus described Living Things as the low point of the band, "because it copies a long outdated concept to death". The formula "someone screams, someone raps" is outdated and the album is boring with a few exceptions. The music portal CDstarts attested the album “the artistic explosive power of a China gun that got wet”. Visions explained the band's success by saying that Linkin Park is the band that always most reliably fulfills the needs of their fans. Living Things is far from the original Nu Metal , the band's radio rock is characterized by the "hardest soft guitars in the world".
