Incubus is an American rock band from Calabasas , California that was formed in 1991. Their style of music was initially a mixture of funk metal and crossover , reminiscent of the sound of bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers , Primus and Mr. Bungle . Today their music is more in the field of alternative rock . The band founded the Make Yourself Foundation in 2003 to donate money to charitable foundations.

history

Brandon Boyd live (2004)

The band was founded in 1991 by Brandon Boyd (vocals), Michael "Mike" Einziger (guitar), Alex "Dirk Lance" Katunich (bass) and Jose Pasillas II (drums). In 1995 the debut album Fungus Amongus was released . In 1996 Incubus met Gavin Koppel aka "DJ Lyfe", who was of the opinion that the sound of Incubus could be expanded with hip-hop elements. The band went into the experiment and in the same year the EP Enjoy Incubus was released with new versions of the songs You will be a Hot Dancer , Shaft , Take Me to Your Leader and Hilikus . Also with the new pieces Version and Azwethinkweiz .

In 1997 Incubus were able to contribute the song Familiar as the soundtrack for the film adaptation of the cult comic Spawn and in the same year the band recorded their new record SCIENCE . The sound was more and more characterized by metal , funk and hip-hop and showed the musicians' willingness to experiment. Mike Einziger set himself the goal of creating sounds that are untypical for guitars, and he was inspired by the sound of the electronic musician Björk . DJ Lyfe built more and more hip-hop samples into the songs and the turntables became an integral part of the Incubus sound.

Upon completion, SCIENCE contained funk metal pieces like New Skin and A Certain Shade of Green , pure funk like Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song) and hip-hop instrumentals like Magic Medicine .

DJ Kilmore, who joined the band in 1998

The band Opprobrium , which wanted to reunite in 1997 under their original name "Incubus", changed to their current name. Incubus was already better known under that name than the band, which formed in 1986, but split up in 1991.

In 1998 Incubus separated from Gavin "DJ Lyfe" Koppel for personal reasons and took his place with DJ Christopher "Chris" Kilmore, a long-time friend of the band who quickly fitted into the band and became a permanent member of Incubus. However, Gavin Koppell did not accept the motivation and threatened his competitor with death several times. In 2010, after continuing threats, Koppell was sentenced not to get closer than 100 meters to Chris Kilmore.

In 1999 the band released the album Make Yourself . The first two single releases Stellar and Pardon Me were very successful, but the real hit single of the album was the single Drive , released in 2001 , which made it into the top 10 of the Billboard charts and paved the way for Incubus into the mainstream .

In 2001 the album Morning View was released , which immediately landed at number 2 on the US album charts and shows the band as a whole calmer, if not less experimental.

Ben Kenney (2012)

In June / July 2003 Incubus went on tour for the first time with Ben Kenney, who came to replace Alex Dirk Lance Katunich, from whom the band had separated in April. Kenney had previously played guitar with The Roots and knew some Incubus band members through their Time Lapse Consortium project. In addition to bass and guitar, he also plays drums and sings on his solo albums.

In 2004 the album A Crow Left of the Murder was released ... which, unlike its two predecessors, lacks a hit single. Especially with regard to the lyrics, the band has developed a lot. Political stance is taken more strongly than on any Incubus album before, the corresponding piece Megalomaniac receives a Grammy nomination for best “Hard Rock Performance”. In the same year the live DVD Incubus - Alive at Red Rocks was released .

In spring 2005 the band played at many festivals in Europe ( Rock am Ring , Rock im Park , Aerodrome , Frequency ). In the middle of the year the soundtrack for the movie Stealth was released, to which Incubus contributed three new pieces - Make a Move , Admiration and Neither of Us Can See .

In September 2006 the next single Anna Molly was presented, on November 24th the album Light Grenades was released . In 2007, the next singles Dig , Love Hurts and Oil and Water were presented. The song drive was also released on the soundtrack to the movie Kings of the Waves .

In summer 2008 they played again at the well-known Rock-am-Ring Festival in Germany, where their performance was broadcast live on MTV .

Mike Einziger at a concert (2012)

On June 12, 2009, the band's best-of album Monuments and Melodies was released in Germany . As Brandon Boyd announced on the band's website at Christmas 2008, two CDs feature the band's most successful songs on the one hand, and new pieces ( Black Heart Inertia and Midnight Swim ) on the other, and no tracks previously released on any of the band's albums as well as a cover song ( Let's Go Crazy by Prince ) and an acoustic version of A Certain Shade of Green . According to the band, whose members have turned to private affairs in the meantime (e.g. Mike Einziger studies composition at Harvard University), this best-of should bridge the time until a new album is released in 2011.

Brandon Boyd live in the year (2012)

Singer Brandon Boyd released their first solo album, The Wild Trapeze , in 2010 , and the band plans to work on new songs from late summer. On April 4, 2011 the new single Adolescents was released , the first single from the album If Not Now, When? . This album is less aggressive and rocking than you are used to from Incubus. Incubus explained the rather romantic album with the words: "Aggression and fast rock just don't fit into our lives".

At the end of 2015 the band started working on a new album. The single "Nimble Bastard", which ties in with the energetic style from the album Light Grenades , was released in February 2017. Album 8 was released on April 21, 2017 under Island Records . Skrillex participated in the production of the album.

In August 2019 the new song "Into the Summer" came out.
