Numb (in German : "numb" or "unfeeling") is a song by the American rock band Linkin Park . It is the third single from the second studio album, Meteora . It was released as a single on September 8, 2003.

A year later, the song was also re-recorded for the mashup album Collision Course together with Jay-Z as Numb / Encore .

Music video

The music video was shot primarily in Prague , with the band's performance filmed in a cathedral by Chester Bennington in Los Angeles due to health problems . Directed by the band DJ Joe Hahn .

The video is about a young student, played by Briana Evigan , who is socially marginalized and struggles with internal problems. She is withdrawn and spends her time drawing pictures, which is based on the song Breaking the Habit , which was originally called Drawing . At school she is teased and laughed at by teachers and students. When she falls, nobody helps her up and when she sits down next to other girls, they get up and leave. The word "Numb" (Eng. "Numb") is carved on her left arm. In her room, out of anger and desperation, she throws her drawing against the wall and finally runs into the cathedral where the band played as if she had heard the band, but it has disappeared without a trace.

In 2018, 15 years after it was released on YouTube, the video hit 1 billion views as fans launched an unofficial campaign to increase the video's popularity after Chester Bennington's death in 2017.

Chart placements

Numb is one of Linkin Park's most commercially successful singles. Only In the End was listed longer on the US Billboard Hot 100 than Numb . It was also awarded 4 times platinum in the United States . In Germany and Switzerland, the respective highest positions were reached after Chester Bennington's death in July 2017. The single had previously reached number 19 and 15 respectively. In Austria, Numb entered the charts for the first time in 2017.
