The 2005 MTV Video Music Awards took place on August 28, 2005. The prize was awarded to videos that premiered from July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2005. The show host was Diddy . The award ceremony took place at the American Airlines Arena in Miami , Florida . The big winner was punk band Green Day , which won a total of seven VMAs, including Best Rock Video, Best Group Video, Viewer's Choice and Video of the Year .

The award ceremony took place under the shadow of Hurricane Katrina . For this reason, part of the pre-show was canceled. The award itself could take place. Two weeks later, MTV raised funds for the victims of the hurricane.

Actress and model Eva Longoria appeared in swimwear despite the hurricane and made an inappropriate joke for which she was harshly criticized. She later auctioned off the swimwear for a good cause.
