The 1985 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony took place on September 13, 1985. The prize was awarded to videos that premiered from May 2, 1984 to May 1, 1985. The ceremony was held at Radio City Music Hall , New York City , New York, hosted by Eddie Murphy .

The winner of the evening was Don Henley , who received four awards for his video for The Boys of Summer , including the one for Video of the Year. The video also received the most nominations for a single video, at seven. David Lee Roth got his two videos, the Louis Prima - Cover Just a Gigolo / I Is not Got Nobody and the Beach Boys -Cover California Girls most nominations as an artist.
