The presentation of the MTV Video Music Awards 1996 took place on September 4, 1996. The prize was awarded to videos that premiered from June 16, 1995 to June 14, 1996. The award ceremony took place at Radio City Music Hall , New York City , New York . Dennis Miller was the moderator .

The evening's winners and most of the nominations (nine) went to The Smashing Pumpkins , who took home seven Moonmen, six for their video for Tonight, Tonight and one for 1979 . The band had been badly shaken before the show, shortly before they lost their tour keyboard to an overdose and split up with drummer Jimmy Chamberlin . So the group only appeared as a trio. Alanis Morissette ( Ironic ) and Björk ( It's Oh So Quiet ) shared six nominations . Morisette eventually won three awards, much like rapper Coolio .

On stage there was a reunion of Van Halen with their first singer David Lee Roth . Van Halen presented Best Male Video , but took the opportunity to do more to promote themselves instead of presenting the award.
